Weakley Couple Celebrates 79th Wedding Anniversary

Posted

A Weakley County couple, Tom and Bena Parks, celebrated their 79th wedding anniversary on Sunday, January 5.

James Thomas (Tom) Parks, age 18 and Verbena (Bena) Mingon Castleman age 16 were married January 5 1946 in Corinth Mississippi. Witnesses were A.C. Butts of Fulton, Kentucky and Herman Lee Parks of Fulton Kentucky.

Parents of the groom were Herman Hunt Parks and Zora Faye Harwood Parks. Parents of the bride were Joseph Henry Castleman and Odie Hazelwood Castleman.

The Parks lived and worked most of their life around the South Fulton-Fulton area, raising five children on a farm, Ray (Ann) Parks, Janice (Larry) Clark, Tommy (Vicki) Parks, Steve (Debra) Parks and Ronnie (Pam) Parks. The Parks worked in the public until they were in their 80’s.

When the Parks got off work from their regular jobs they would work their tobacco farm and tend gardens big enough for their entire family. Bena cooked breakfast and supper every day.

The Parks belonged to Ruthville Missionary Baptist Church for many years.

Tom and Bena never wanted to spend any time apart because they were afraid the other might need them.

Tom and Bena are both currently residing together in Weakley County Nursing Home.
