WEAKLEY COUNTY (September 27) - Schools across the country are attempting to address learning loss as the result of the pandemic. Weakley County Schools have several activities and programs planned, including an After School Scholars program set to launch in January. The program will provide tutors in reading and math for 90 minutes twice a week for students in grades 1-12.

The planned after school program takes its name from the successful Summer Scholars program, which preliminary indicators show successfully helped reduce the typical “summer slide” experienced during summer vacation.

Angie Rushing, the director of the Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief (ESSER) 3.0, is overseeing the recruitment of tutors and school leads who will be housed at each school in the county for the 12-15-week focus.

The positions will be filled with current teachers, Education Assistants, retired teachers, and/or teachers-in-training. A December training is planned to provide sample schedules and tutoring suggestions.

Using ESSER funding, tutors will receive a stipend of $40/hour for the total of 3 hours of tutoring on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Leads, who can choose to also tutor, will receive $500 for their work ensuring that tutors are on site, buses have the transportation information they need, and snacks are available.

To apply for the tutor or lead role, candidates can use the online application found under What’s New at www.weakleycountyschools.com.
