In a story written by Shannon Taylor, editor of the Dresden Enterprise, regarding comments made by new Dresden Alderperson Jennifer Schlicht regarding traffic conditions on East Main Street and particularly at the intersection of East Main and Parkway Street, where she resides. She even went so far as to point out that the problem exist in other areas of the city from dangerous driving. That was good and needed to be brought to the attention of the board.
Elected city officials need to be mindful that the situation of which Alderperson Schlicht complained is a situation that exists all over Dresden, not just East Main Street, as Schlicht noted in her comments. The Mayor and city aldermen need to spend some time and be observant on Locust Street, around the square in downtown, on Evergreen Street, Pikeview, Morrow, North Wilson and any number of other streets in Dresden and they will see that the problem does in fact exist all over Dresden.
The installation of "rumble strips" on the street and highway of East Main prior to the four way stop may marginally affect the problem, but I'm guessing that residents living in close proximity to the rumble strips will grow annoyed at hearing the noise generated when a car, and especially a speeding car, passes over them day and night.
It is this writer's opinion, based upon my own observations, that the more effective solution to the problem rest with pushing law enforcement to start enforcing the law in Dresden, and just not traffic laws. Dresden Mayor Mark Maddox said that he spoke to Police Chief Bryan Chandler who stated that he was committed to stepping up patrols in that area. Maybe, Chief Chandler could be committed to enforcing traffic laws and city ordinances all over Dresden and not just one tiny area on one street of Dresden. Now, that would be a real change for Dresden.
Hopefully, more aldermen will find the fortitude to speak up about real problems in Dresden and demand that laws and city ordinances actually be enforced.
