Survivors Gather for Relay for Life
Highlights from the 2022 Weakley County Relay for Life: Goes Disney.Survivors, caregivers, and members of the community gathered at the UT Martin football stadium parking lot on Saturday, Oct. 8 for the Weakley County Relay for Life with the theme, Relay Goes Disney.
The night began with a special survivors dinner at the UT Martin Champion Room, where survivors were fed and welcomed to the event. Survivors then gathered outside and took a survivors lap and released balloons. The track was lit with luminary bags which were lit at nightfall.
During the event, Robert Lee and Matthew Lewis participated in a Womanless Beauty Review. They donned dresses and gathered money to go towards Relay for Life. Lee raised $133 and Lewis gathered $115.
Rolling Thunder TN-6 presented the flag while Annabelle Lovell sang the National Anthem with invocation by George Pasley.
This year’s Honorary Survivors were Jasmine Corbitt and Terry Parker. Curtis Pettis was the emcee.
This year’s Relay for Life Leadership Team was Linda Ramsey, Joe Lofaro, Mary Elizabeth Bell, Beth and Farris Cole, and Iona and Kenneth Creasy.
Different teams set up during the event with some offering bouncy houses, food, candy, face painting and water.
This year’s Relay for Life was the first in-person event since 2019, with the 2020 and 2021 events being held in cars due to the pandemic.
As of publication, the Weakley County Relay for Life has raised $13,141.63 with a goal of $75,000.00. As of Thursday, Oct. 13, there are two days left to donate and donations can be made by going to www.relayforlife.org/weakleytn.
The teams who helped make this event possible include: UT Martin, Cancer Sucks - The Lovell Family, Wal-Mart, Friends of Hope, MTD, Leadership Team, Woodmen of the World, Chi Omega, ADPi, and Cane Creek. Sponsors were WCMEC, Woodmen of the World, In Memory of Ned Ray McWherter, Spire Cane Creek, Manpower, Public Wells Baptist Church, The Sideline, Bowlin Funeral Home, and First Community Bank of the Heartland.
