Sheriff's Department Warns of Scam

Posted

WEAKLEY COUNTY - Investigator Captain Randall McGowan of the Weakley County Sheriff's Department is warning people of another scam targeting community members.

According to a press release, people in Weakley County have reported receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be Sgt. Merrell with the Weakley County Sheriff's Department.

According to the release, the caller wants people to believe there is a warrant for their arrest or there is a problem with some sort of back taxes that they owe.

They give a call-back number to the victim. An individual claiming to be Sgt. Merrell answers the call. The WCSD advises there is a Sgt. Merrell, who is an officer with the local sheriff's department, but the caller's voice is not Sgt. Merrell's.

McGowan said this is an obvious scam and if the call-back number given is not 731-364-5454, do not call the person back. The captain also advises to not send money to anyone you do not know.
