“Remembrance”
The Battle of Okinawa took place on the southernmost of Japan’s main islands and was called “Operation Iceberg”. This 82-day battle was the Pacific Theater’s largest and bloodiest battle. On April 1, 1945, 60,000 U.S. soldiers and two divisions of Marines engaged the Japanese on Okinawa where more than one in five died while another 60% were wounded. Japan fared even worse, losing 100,000 troops and perhaps as many as 160,000 civilians.
In WWⅡ there were 407,316 totals U.S. casualties and 671,278 injured. Today there are only 119,550 WWⅡ veterans still living with 131 dying a day. Please help us honor these brave men and women of WWⅡ and those serving today by letting them know “You are not forgotten”.
