Robert “Bob” Carroll Cantrell, 95, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2022, at home following a prolonged illness. He was preceded in death by his parents; his older sister, Billie Jean Cullivan; and younger brother, Glen Cantrell. He has nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Bob Cantrell was born October 4, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan, to William Cecil and Hilda (Alderdice) Cantrell. The family moved back to Palmersville, Tennessee, and started Cantrell Lumber Company in 1927. Bob graduated from high school in 1944 and was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corp. He served in the Philippines in 1945 and 1946 at Manila, Mindanao, and Palawan Island. He took over the sawmill in 1953 and retired in 1991. He served on the Weakly County School Board from 1971 to 1988 and was active at the Lynnville United Methodist Church while he was physically able.
Bob was continually active in the affairs of Palmersville and Weakley County as part of the Ruritan Club, driving his steam engine in parades and being involved in high school sports. Bob was indeed a friend of the community and not one to shy away from lending a hand when someone needed assistance. He was part of a generation that will truly be missed.
