Mrs. Calhoun, fondly known as Pat, was born on March 24, 1937 in Sunbright, TN to the late Dr. Sam H. Jones and Vivian Lyons Jones. Pat grew up in Sunbright and Oak Ridge, TN graduating from UT Knoxville with a teaching degree and soon found a position at Hornbeak School in Hornbeak, TN where she met and married the love of her life, the Rev. James M. Calhoun. They were married at the First Methodist Church in Union City, TN on June 26, 1960 and enjoyed 64 years together. Pat was a member of the Dyer First United Methodist Church in Dyer, TN.
For 60+ years they served in many churches in Tennessee and Kentucky. Pat easily assumed the role of “preacher’s wife” and led and loved their church families alongside her husband. She was a very active leader in the United Methodist Women for many years. Pat began her 30 year, teaching career in Hornbeak, then Ridgely, TN and with a move to Kentucky, she accepted a position in the Paducah City School System where she taught for 27 years.
Pat was a talented pianist and vocalist, singing many “special” duets with Bro. Jim. They were often asked to sing at church services, weddings and funerals through the years. She was an artist, and particularly enjoyed china painting. She loved crafting, especially, making Christmas ornaments. Pat’s ornaments still adorn many Christmas trees of friends and family each season.
Pat and Bro. Jim enjoyed camping with friends and family, making many trips across the USA with their travel trailer. They also traveled abroad visiting several European countries and making eight trips together to the Holy Land.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one brother, Sam H. Jones III of Knoxville and several nieces and nephews. They are Stacey Galloway and Scott (Gina) Galloway of Smithfield, VA., Karen (Bill) Dennis, Keith (Elizabeth) Hawn of Sunbright, TN, Don (Patricia) Gray, Susan (Joe) Hill, Janet (Russell) Hilton of Union City, TN, Deanna (Lynn) Treece of Springville, TN, Bobby (Suzanne) Calhoun of South Fulton, TN and Claude Cranford of Hornbeak, TN and special family friend and caregiver, Rae Ball.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Sarah Jane Jones Hawn and Marilyn Jones Galloway.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any contributions be made to the Cobbs Chapel Cemetery Association c/o Mayme Denton, 3623 W. Main St. Union City, TN 38261.
Her family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Union City Rehab and Nursing. During her short stay she was given excellent care and family was always greeted with a smile. “Miss” Pat was a sweetheart and a true southern lady. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
