Multi-County Partners Plan Day of Flying Kites

Posted

MARTIN (April 15) - The Weakley County Reconciliation Project (WCRP) has partnered with Obion County’s newly-established NAACP chapter, UT Martin’s Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, and the Office of Student Life and Multicultural Affairs to host a Kite Day celebration.

The event will be held on the UT Martin campus at Pacer Pond, Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Free kite kits can be picked up in advance from the C.E. Weldon Public Library or, by UTM students at the Office of Student Life and Multicultural Affairs. Following COVID-19 guidelines, all kites must be made in advance of the event. Families are welcome to bring their own kites for the day’s event.

Popsicles and refreshments will be available, along with prizes for the best-decorated kites.

The kite day event is being held to call attention to environmental justice and will feature a talk with Dr. Eric Pelren on sustainability and environmental justice. Pelren, a professor of wildlife biology, explains that, “Any change that results in long-term cost savings increases our economic sustainability, and any that increases equity, inclusivity and social justice increases our social sustainability.”

The Environmental Justice Movement has broadened the perspective of the environment beyond the scope of conservation and preservation of natural resources and has defined the environment as “Where we live, work, play, learn and pray.”
