Mistakes at Covington Costly for Westview

Covington is a good high school football team, no doubt.

Westview appeared to be every bit its equal, but three turnovers proved costly as the visiting Chargers suffered a 43-19 loss.

Westview coach Jarod Neal acknowledged that Covington was a worthy opponent, but Westview helped them out.

"Covington is good, but it was one of those games where we didn't need to make mistakes," Neal said. "We had three turnovers and that was the difference."

The Chargers struggled on the ground, managing just 30 yards.

Westview quarterback Miles Vincent had a good night, throwing for 217 yards and three touchdowns.

Cooper Spaulding had nine catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Donteze Joy had 35 yards in receptions and a touchdown.

"Against good teams, you can't make a bunch of mistakes," said Neal. "Mistakes were the difference at Dyersburg and they were at Covington."

Now it's on to Shelby County to face the Bolton Wildcats, 7-3. Bolton blanked a winless Douglass team 35-0 this past week.

The coach said the change in weather can affect some teams adversely, but so far the Chargers are managing it well.

"We're handling the weather decently," Neal said. "With a younger team that's not really used to playing this late in the year, we're handling it well."

Kickoff is 7 p.m. Friday at Bolton.
