Martin Public Library to Hold book Discussion

Posted

All are welcome to join the discussion of Norman Maclean's classic work A River Runs through It from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, in the History and Genealogy Room at Martin Public Library.  This discussion will be led by Friends of the Library member Jim Clark, who says that one does not have to be skilled at fly fishing in order to enjoy this work of nonfiction, one of three stories with settings in the West that are included in the volume.

A review in the Chicago Tribune noted that Maclean's book is "as beautiful as anything in Thoreau or Hemingway." A review in The New York Times also captures the essence of this short masterpiece: "If there is a smarter, more affecting meditation on the themes of fathers and sons, brothers, the pleasures of the natural world, love, loss, and the haunting power of water, I have yet to come across it."

This is the last formal book discussion planned by the "Let's Talk about It" group for the 2024-25 year (September through April). FOL members and library staff encourage any interested persons to come to this discussion and bring a friend—and also, if time allows, to read the other two stories in the work.
