Jack Hoover Porter 1929 - 2020

Posted

Jack Hoover Porter passed over into Glory in the early morning hours of November 22, 2020, at Jackson Madison County Hospital in Jackson, TN. Jack was born on February 26, 1929, to Rev. Albert and Helen Porter. He had 5 brothers - Chester, Ray, Roy, James and Gene; and 2 sisters - Marie and Helen all of whom have preceded him in death.

After graduating from Greenfield High School, Jack honorably served his country in the United States Army immediately upon being drafted and served in peace time overseas. Jack was the co-founder of Porter Brothers Produce with his brother James of whom Jack would often proclaim, “I had the best business partner in the world.” Together they continued to expand from a local produce truck shipper to what is presently Akin & Porter Produce, a largely national produce wholesale distributor with international operations in Mexico.

Jack married Faye Edmonds on December 4, 1949, and was a faithful husband for two weeks shy of 71 years. In addition to his business skills, Jack chose to serve Greenfield on the Weakley County School Board for nearly 20 years and served faithfully the people of District 3. He also served for many years as a director of the Greenfield Banking Company. Along with his love for the citizens of Greenfield, he loved his church, Bethel Baptist Church. Jack served as a deacon and faithful Sunday School teacher for over 50 years, as well as being deeply involved in church service in countless other areas. Jack placed his faith in Jesus as a believer and recognized that the source of each blessing and success came from God.

He also had the privilege of serving on the trustee board and foundation board of Union University in Jackson, TN where upon retirement was bestowed trustee emeritus. Jack is survived by his wife, Faye; their three children, Larry (Teresa) Porter, Mark (late wife Betty) Porter, and Tammy (Jeff) Perkins. He also survived by 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, all of which he loved dearly. Through the years, Jack Porter served with diligence, faithfulness, kindness, generosity and always with a smile and desire to make an impact on those around him. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there was a public graveside service only at 3 p.m. Saturday, November 28, 2020. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to the Building Fund of Bethel Baptist Church. Make your check payable to Bethel Baptist Church and write, “Building Fund Donation 2020” on the memo line. Please mail your donation to the following address:
