Faith Column: Such a Time

"Stop trying to fit in when you were born to stand out" (Beverly Kearney).

The Jews were in danger. Beguiled by his right-hand-man Haman, Ahasarus had made a proclamation allowing the annihilation of the children of Israel. Unbeknownst to the dictator, and purely by God's grace, the queen was herself a Jew. If Abraham's descendants were to be delivered, her relative (Mordecai) knew she must be the one to stand up and help. His encouragement for her is a verse that bears studying today (Esther 4:14). Notice how his words to her can challenge even us.

First, it's not about you. In truth, Mordecai wasn't just encouraging her. He was getting on to her. As much as you will see Esther 4:14 plastered on mugs, plaques, and cards, it is often never studied in context. In verse 13, he addresses her unwillingness to stand up. It's understandable. To go before the king without being summoned could mean death. Still, she must understand that she should choose God before security, others before self, and faith over fear.

Second, God is going to win. His will - His plan - will be accomplished. Mordecai has it right. That is exactly the purpose for which God wants to use her. Nevertheless, God will come out on the winning side whether you allow Him to use you or not. Do you want to be with Him, or will you choose the losing side?

Third, God can use you! Who knows? Mordecai asks if this isn't precisely why Esther had been put here. What are the odds, after all? Is it more likely that God put you here to serve yourself or His plan and people? So do what you can do, and allow Him to work through you!

Who knows? Did God give you your job to make money or contacts? Did He give you a circle of friends to share life or Jesus? Did the Lord give you your talents to be special or a servant? Did He give you your family to meet your wants or to model his ways? Did the Almighty give you your spouse to get your pleasures or to glorify His purposes? Who knows? Perhaps He has put you where you are today to accomplish His will. So look for the opportunities He gives, and have courage enough to serve Him over self in such a time as this! I love you, and God does too!
