DRESDEN (May 4) — As Monday night’s meeting of the Weakley County Election Commission opened, Administrator of Elections Alex Britt informed board members about changes in election procedures, due to concerns over the coronavirus.

“Like everybody else, we’ve got to try to figure out how to hold elections while COVID-19 is happening,” Britt said. He added his office is working closely with election officials at the state level to develop a workable safety protocol.

As with other public gatherings, crowd size, social distancing, the use of protective masks, sanitizing workspaces and other precautionary measures may be employed to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

It is the job of the election commission to oversee the implementation of election procedures. They are: president – John Robert Freeman (R); secretary – Amy Lewellen (D); Britan Coleman (R); Wendell Verdell (R); and Linda Ramsey (D), who replaced April Lieberman on the board as a Democratic representative.

In other business, board members performed voter registration inspection as they do every quarter.

Then, they locked the ballot boxes for the August 6 State and Federal Primary and State and County General Election.

The board also approved the minutes of the past two meetings, including their regular meeting held on February 3, 2020 and a called meeting on March 17, 2020.

The next regular meeting of the Weakley County Election Commission is scheduled for 6 p.m. on June 1.
