Book Discussion Planned at Martin Public Library

Posted

Friends of the Library book discussions for February and March offer area residents variety and many opportunities for meaningful engagement.

The February discussion of Jeanine Cummins' bestselling novel "American Dirt" is scheduled for Thursday, February 24, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Martin Public Library.

This compelling novel focuses on the journey of a mother and her eight-year-old son from Acapulco to the United States. Forced to flee because of the violent drug cartels, Lydia and Luca soon find themselves miles and worlds away from their comfortable middle-class existence. Instantly transformed into migrants, Lydia and Luca ride la bestia/"the beast" — trains that make their way north toward the United States. They join the countless people trying to reach "el norte."

One critic said that this novel is "A perfect balancing act with terror on one side and love on the other." Friends of the Library member Mercedes Stennett will lead this discussion.

At the March 24 discussion, to be led by FOL member Judy Clark, participants are asked to be prepared to discuss their favorite mystery genre and/or author(s). One enthusiastic reader has already said that she will take a trip back to the Nancy Drew novels that were so important to her as a young reader. Discussion leaders for April and May are Roberta Peacock (April 28) and Barbara Trentham (May 26).

Friends of the Library members coordinate all activities with Martin Public Library staff and encourage anyone interested to attend the discussions. Members also note that participants do not have to have finished the entire book before attending the discussion. Attendance at these monthly events range from 10–20 participants, and additional chairs can be added as needed to the comfortable and spacious designated discussion areas in the new library.
