Safety Bus Program Cancelled Due to COVID-19

The Martin Police Department, along with sponsor, Volunteer Distributing Co., Inc., announced the cancellation of the safety bus program this coming New Year’s holiday.

“After careful consideration, we have determined that we cannot safely operate the bus while following CDC COVID-19 guidelines. We still want to encourage people to drink responsibly and to make arrangements for a sober driver,” a press release issued by the MPD noted.

“Hopefully, this pandemic will subside and we will be able to continue our partnership and operate the safety bus in the future. Please enjoy the holidays and be careful,” it added.

According to Assistant Police Chief Phillip Fuqua, the 15-passenger bus normally provides about 100 rides New Year’s Eve. He states one officer drives the bus and a second officer helps riders on and off the bus.

Assistant Chief Fuqua notes the program, which was initiated by former Martin Police Chief J.D. Sanders, has been in operation for approximately 15 years now.
