WEAKLEY COUNTY (December 1) — Members of the Public Works Committee of the Weakley County Commission considered bid proposals for the rural solid waste disposal contract, when they on met Tuesday, December 1.

During discussion, county commissioners agreed the winning bidder must include information on customers’ bills informing senior citizens (age 60 or over) they are eligible to receive a reduced rate for garbage disposal.

Committee members voted to accept Republic Services’ bid, which was approximately $5 less per month than a competing bidder.

The rate for a single trashcan pickup per week is as follows:

  • Regular customers: First year - $14.89; second year - $15.41; and third year - $15.95;
  • Seniors: First year - $11.21; second year - $11.60; and third year - $12.00.

The cost of providing an extra cart for regular and senior customers are: First year - $4.75; second year - $4.92; and third year - $5.09.

Committee Chairman Commissioner Dennis Doster said, “The contract for garbage pickup ends December 31, so what we’re doing is renewing our contract. There’s a pretty good discount for seniors, so we want Weakley County citizens to know about that. Seniors can then contact Republic in order to get the discount.”
