Pre-K Registration Rescheduled, Reformatted for May 19, 26

WEAKLEY COUNTY — Pre-K and Kindergarten Registration in Weakley County was originally scheduled for March 19 – two days after schools officially closed for COVID-19. The newly rescheduled registration dates reflect Weakley County Schools’ continued commitment to observing social distancing guidelines. Pre-K registration is now on two dates: May 19 allows for registration packet pick up. May 26 is for packet drop off. And the entire process will be a “drive through” operation.

“We want to make this as easy and efficient as we possibly can while adhering to our priority of the health and safety,” said Terri Stephenson, the instructional supervisor who oversees the county’s Pre-K and Kindergarten programs.

Kindergarten registration is separated from Pre-K and will occur in June.

Children should be registered at the school location where they will attend the 2020-21 school year. Locations of pre-k in Weakley County are: Dresden Elementary, Greenfield School, Gleason School, Martin Primary and Sharon School.

Pre-K is available for any child who will be 4 years old before August 15, 2020. Any child who will be 5 years old by August 15, 2020 may register for Kindergarten.

Acceptance into a Pre-K classroom is determined on income eligibility set by the Department of Health and Human Services, which is why proof of family income is required at registration. The limit is 20 students per Pre-K classroom. Applications are numbered as they are received.

Deborah Perkins, supervisor of special education, points out that three-year-olds have a special opportunity at Sharon School.

“Giving children the chance to see all the ways that we are alike and different is a gift,” she noted. “I would be happy to speak with any parent who would like to explore what it means for their child to be in a classroom that includes children with disabilities.”

To speak with Perkins, parents can call 731-364-5554.

To register for pre-kindergarten, applicants will need a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate, the child’s Social Security card (optional, but preferred), the immunization record, proof of a physical exam in 2020, proof of residency, and proof of family income.
