The Martin Middle School Chargers ended an exceptional 2022 season Saturday in Memphis as they fell 8-6 to Memphis Business Academy (MBA) in the TMSAA football championship game, hosted by Kirby High School.
After battling it out for four quarters, the state’s top two teams were still stalemated 0-0 at the end of the fourth, sending the game into overtime.
The Chargers scored first in overtime on a keeper carry by quarterback Graham Simpson, but the two-point attempt failed, leaving Martin with just six on the board.
MBA tied it up 6-6 with a 14-yard scoring pass and then claimed the win by two with a successful conversion.
“MBA was a big, strong, fast, and physical team,” said Martin head coach Kyle Pack. “They controlled the ball most of the game, but we recovered two of their fumbles. I couldn’t be more proud of my guys for the way they fought and never gave up.”
The Chargers finish the season as state runner-up with an overall 9-1 record.
