Big Cypress Tree State Park Programs and Activities for September 3-5

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3RD 

8:30 AM – Bird Hike – Meet at Visitor Center

– Get an introduction to backyard birding with seasonal interpreter Taylor. This hike will be of easy difficulty and focus on the sound identification of common birds. Meet at the visitor center. Bug spray and water encouraged. Optional items include walking sticks, field guides, and binoculars. 

9:30 AM – Pelt Station – Meet at Visitor Center

– Seasonal interpreter Taylor will be set up in the visitor center showing off some of the pelts and skulls of mammals that can be found at Big Cypress Tree State Park.

10:30 AM – Technology in the Outdoors – Meet at Outdoor Classroom – Paid Program $5

1:30 PM – Snakes of Big Cypress Tree – Meet at Outdoor Classroom 

– Curious about what kind of snakes live around the area? Swing by the outdoor classroom to talk to seasonal interpreter Taylor about a few of the snakes that you would find at the park, why snakes are important to the environment, and how to identify venomous vs. nonvenomous snakes. She’ll also introduce you to Cornflake the corn snake! 

2:30 PM – Amphibians of Big Cypress Tree – Meet at Outdoor Classroom 

– Learn about some of the amphibians found in the area and maybe even meet a few! Join seasonal Taylor to learn how amphibians can be an ecological indicator for the environment and what that means. 

 

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4TH 

8:30 AM – Bird Hike – Meet at Visitor Center

– Learn about some of the amphibians found in the area and maybe even meet a few! Join seasonal Taylor to learn how amphibians can be an ecological indicator for the environment and what that means. 

10:30 AM – Pelt Station – Meet at Visitor Center

– Seasonal interpreter Taylor will be set up in the visitor center showing off some of the pelts and skulls of mammals that can be found at Big Cypress Tree State Park.

1:30 PM – Fire Starting – Meet in Playground Parking Lot
– Find out the basics of fire starting with seasonal interpreter Taylor.

2:30 PM – Boardwalk Nature Hike – Meet at Visitor Center

– Enjoy a leisurely hike down the boardwalk with seasonal interpreter Taylor to observe and enjoy nature. This hike will be of easy difficulty, bug spray and water are encouraged. Optional items include field guides and binoculars.   

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5TH 

9:00 AM – Herp Hike – Meet at Visitor Center

– Get an introduction to backyard herping with seasonal interpreter Taylor. This hike will be of easy difficulty and focus on the sight identification of common reptiles and amphibians in the swamp. Meet at the visitor center. Bug spray and water encouraged. Optional items include walking sticks and field guides. 

10:30 AM – Amphibians of Big Cypress Tree – Meet at Outdoor Classroom 

– Learn about some of the amphibians found in the area and maybe even meet a few! Join seasonal Taylor to learn how amphibians can be an ecological indicator for the environment and what that means. 

11:00 AM – Snakes of Big Cypress Tree – Meet at Outdoor Classroom 

– Curious about what kind of snakes live around the area? Swing by the outdoor classroom to talk to seasonal interpreter Taylor about a few of the snakes that you would find at the park, why snakes are important to the environment, and how to identify venomous vs. nonvenomous snakes. – Get an introduction to common plants with seasonal interpreter Taylor. This hike will be of easy difficulty and focus on the identification of common flowers and trees. Meet at the outdoor classroom next to the visitor center. Bug spray and water are encouraged. Optional items include walking sticks and field guides. 

2:30 PM – Leaves, Leaves, Leaves – Meet at Outdoor Classroom

– Create your own leaf identification book with seasonal interpreter Taylor. We’ll be using leaves from the trees around the park to create leaf rubbings in small book to use for beginner identification.  All supplies needed for this activity provided.
