DRESDEN (January 28) – The circumstances surrounding the apparent double homicide of two young Greenfield men at Reelfoot Lake in Obion County Monday morning are described as out of the ordinary by 27th Judicial District Attorney General Tommy Thomas.

“Nothing is ordinary about this case … But I am going to try my best to get all of the truth out there as we know it,” Thomas said Thursday morning, adding ethically they don’t intend to have the case tried in the press. Ultimately, Thomas wants to squash rumors and “garbage” circulating about the incident and those involved in the case.

Wednesday afternoon, Thomas met with about 20 members of various law enforcement agencies as they provided updates, witness accounts and further physical evidence found at the scene as investigators piece together what happened on the water that morning that led to the untimely deaths of Zachery Grooms, 25, and Chance Black, 26, both of Greenfield.

The victims were shot in a duck blind on Reelfoot Lake near the Walnut Log area Monday around 11 a.m. Thomas requested Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Special Agents to take the lead in the investigation. By around 10 p.m. Monday evening, the TBI issued a statewide alert seeking the whereabouts of a person of interest, David Vowell, 70, of Martin.

By 4 p.m. Tuesday, the TBI issued arrest warrants filing first-degree murder charges against Vowell in the shooting incident.

Preliminary information from the District Attorney General’s office gives an account of events that potentially transpired the morning of the shooting at the scene.

Grooms, Black and their friend, Jeff Crabtree, were in the duck blind Monday morning when they were approached by Vowell asking if he could hunt with them. While in the blind with the three men, Vowell reportedly shot Grooms in the chest. While Black was attempting to help his friend, Vowell stuck the gun in Black’s side and shot him. Crabtree, who is now the main witness in the investigation, intervened, got his friends into a boat and struck Vowell in the head with a gun. Eventually, Crabtree pushed Vowell into the waist-deep water.

As Crabtree was leaving the blind area in the boat with the two gunshot victims, he told investigators he looked back and saw Vowell up and headed to the bank. An investigation of the scene resulted in the discovery of a spent shotgun shell and jammed gun in the duck blind. Footprints on the bank were also consistent with Crabtree’s witness account.

Thomas said while no motive has yet to be determined, it appears Vowell is suffering from dementia. The DA said it’s his understanding that Vowell duck hunts daily during the season.

As for the speculation that Crabtree is a suspect, Thomas said there is no scenario implicating him in the shooting incident. The DA said Crabtree was friends with the victims. His actions trying to get them help and the little time he had to get them out of the water lead him to be convinced Vowell is the suspect.

Thomas added physical evidence and further facts of the case will show Vowell shot and killed the two victims.

Law enforcement agencies are combing the wilderness surrounding Reelfoot Lake for Vowell. High waters and heavy rainfall hindered search efforts earlier this week. Thomas said investigators have found nothing linking Vowell to receiving any help in leaving the area. Vowell’s vehicle was towed from the scene Monday and his boat was located about 200 yards away from the blind Tuesday.

Thomas said he plans to issue a press release into the incident in the coming days to quell any more conspiracies, rumors or further speculation about the incident.

“We have one survivor, who is a hero, being accused of a triple murder. I want to get the truth out there,” Thomas said.

Autopsies of the victims’ bodies concluded Wednesday in Nashville. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

The victims were graduates of Greenfield High School.

Black is the son of Weakley County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Mark Black and was a gun department manager at Final Flight Outfitters between Martin and Union City.

The business posted the following on its Facebook page Monday, “We lost a member of our team today, Chance Black. He was shot and killed, along with his friend, while duck hunting on Reelfoot Lake. Chance was a full-time manager in our gun department, and what an honor it has been for us to have him on our team. We ask for prayers for Chance’s family, friends, and all others involved as we navigate the impact of their deaths. Death is certain and so is our hope in Jesus, who gives peace that passes all understanding in these times of loss, hurt, and confusion.”

A memorial account has been set up at Greenfield Banking Company for the two families. Donations will be split evenly between the Grooms and Black families. Those wishing to make a donation can drop it off at the bank, located at 112 N. Front St., in Greenfield, or by mail to P.O. Box 47, Greenfield, TN 38230.

Vowell was a retired Martin business owner. Numerous law enforcement agencies are assisting in the search for Vowell, including the U.S. Marshal Service.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts or anyone who was near the area that morning are asked to call his/her local law enforcement agency or the TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND (1-800-824-3463).

The Enterprise will provide updates into this ongoing investigation as they become available.

I find it very hard to believe this 70yr old man could have the strength to do this and come out of the lake and just disappear. Surely someone would have seen him by now.

I agree . I would need to see a lot of evidence to rule out their “freind” who survived .

      I totally agree
And I like how they said in article 3 deaths and this was before he was found dead in water not far from blind

Just curious why did Tommy Thomas say they was shot at 11 a.m. but the third guy said the old man boat pulled up to there blind at 9a.m. What happened in between them 2 hours?

    Why didn’t Crabtree shoot Vowell?

Something just doesn’t add up. Why would a 70 year old man take on 3 young strong men. Something had to be wrong with him to do this. I wonder if he had Alzheimer’s or some type of medical problem. Just can’t see it happening for no reason.

Well let’s see what his autopsy report says “ because I heard they would find his body in the Lake “ that the “ Witness that took the gun from him said “ I don’t know if I hit him 1 time or 100 times . So he knows he killed Vowel and he wouldn’t be found outside of that Lake .So why not just let authorities know he killed him instead people on the streets already heard he was dead in the Lake the same day of the incident…..
