Traditional Memorial Day Services Canceled

WEAKLEY COUNTY (May 19) — Weakley County Veterans Service Officer Rick McKenzie, who retired from his post on Friday, May 15, announced this year’s Memorial Day Program at the War Memorial, located on the south lawn of the Weakley County Courthouse, has been canceled due to COVID-19.
Although there won’t be an in-person Memorial Day program this year, there will be a short video posted on their Facebook page to remember those who paid the ultimate price. Go to facebook.com/wctnva.
“It is with a heavy heart that we canceled the program,” McKenzie said. “This is a day to remember those that gave all for our country. We need to remember them even in times of trouble, like now. The American people have always done what was needed when called. There are still soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines around this world protecting us from harm, even now during this time of hardship.
“Those that perish in war leave a family behind to pick up the pieces and go on with life. It is sad without them, but that is the price of freedom.
“Finally, remember Americans do what it takes for our country, whether it is going to war or fighting on the front lines of a pandemic. Americans do not quit or wait on others to do the job.
“God bless our country and its people.”
