Weakley County Administrator of Elections Alex Britt told the HEED Committee Tuesday morning that the Election Commission wishes to establish an early voting center in Martin to encourage more people to cast their ballots prior to Election Day.
On Tuesday, members of the Health, Education & Economic Development Committee approved several year-end budget resolutions and reviewed the budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
Committee members reviewed the FY 2019-2010 budget, beginning with the Election Commission budget. Administrator of Elections Alex Britt said the Election Commission wishes to establish an early voting center in Martin.
He stated early voting is currently available in Dresden at the Weakley County Election Office located on the corner of Poplar and East Nelson streets. Britt noted that during the last election, 70 percent of Dresden citizens took advantage of early voting, while only 40 percent did so in Martin.
Because of Martin’s large population, he stated an early voting station located there would allow many more citizens to cast their ballots during the early voting period. He added that those in other parts of Weakley County that shop or eat out in Martin could visit their early voting center while they’re in town.
