School Board approves Chargers mascot for all Martin schools; discusses shooter response training

After hearing a request from a school support group Thursday afternoon, Weakley County School Board members voted to adopt the Chargers as the official mascot for all Martin schools.

According to Pritchett, by combining Martin schools under the same mascot, the schools and community would be brought together to identify with the Chargers, like other Weakley County municipalities do at all of their schools (Dresden Lions, Gleason Bulldogs and Greenfield Yellowjackets.)

Another top item for discussion was a presentation concerning school safety.

Coordinator of Safe Schools Lorna Benson introduced Assistant Police Chief Phillip Fuqua and School Resource Officer (SRO) Jason Arant, who took turns talking about the A.L.I.C.E. program. The officers explained this is a revised strategy for use in schools to help students, teachers and other personnel escape death or injury in the event of a school shooting. The acronym A.L.I.C.E. stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate.
