Weakley County committees approve $5 million budget transfer; discuss broadband project

At the request of Director of Schools Randy Frazier, members of the Health, Education and Economic Development (HEED) Committee and the Finance, Ways and Means Committee, recently approved a General Purpose School Fund resolution moving $5,083,242 out of undesignated fund balance into the expenditure line for building improvements.
The money will be used to purchase HVAC units and upgrade other major components of energy efficient systems at area schools.
The work will be paid for out of the School Department’s fund balance, without the necessity of taking out a loan.
Another major topic discussed concerned the Weakley County Broadband Project.
Trevor Bonnstetter, CEO of West Kentucky and Tennessee Telephone Cooperative (WK&T Telephone), stated the cost would be approximately $42 million, with the WK&T and Weakley County Government each being responsible for $21 million of the cost spread out over a 30-year period. This amounts to $892,892 annually for each partner.
