Dresden Elementary & Middle SchoolDresden, Tennessee

Education plays a key role in the lives of Weakley Countians. We pride ourselves on having modern, up to date school buildings and an elementary and secondary education system that we believe is second to none. From 1992 to 1997, the citizens of Weakley County spent over 32 million dollars constructing new school buildings and renovating existing buildings. These state of the art school facilities stand as a tribute to the commitment citizens of Weakley County have to the education of our children. Weakley County school students consistently score at or above state and national averages on scholastic aptitude tests.

Bethel College is the only college of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It was established in 1842 by the West Tennessee Synod of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Granted a charter by the State of Tennessee in 1847, Bethel is located in McKenzie at the border with Weakley County. The college provides four degrees in a variety of fields and also is a pioneer in this area in educational programs for non-traditional adult students.   Weakley County is home to the University of Tennessee at Martin, a four year university with an enrollment in excess of 5,800 students. UTM is the only public university in western Tennessee outside the city of Memphis that provides quality undergraduate education in a traditional college atmosphere. Continuing education programs and selected programs of graduate study meet the life-long educational needs of area residents. Research, scholarship and creative endeavors enhance teaching and increase knowledge.
