Dorothy Glynn Atkins Owen

    Dorothy Glynn Atkins Owen, 76, of Dresden, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis. Celebration of life services for Ms. Owen were held Saturday, April 26, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Jolley Springs Baptist Church near Dresden. Burial followed in Butler Cemetery near Gleason. Dr. Don McCulley, Tony Michael, Michael Simmons, and Jerry Wiggins officiated the services.
    Ms. Owen was a former sewing machine operator for HIS. She was a member of Jolley Springs Baptist Church, where she was a WMU member and former director of the WMU. Ms. Owen was also a member of the Central FCE Club. She was a native of Henry County, born October 13, 1931 to the late Henry Clay and Annie Inez Atkins. In addition to her parents, Ms. Owen was also preceded in death by three sisters, Joy Vowell, Ruby Bell, and Ruth Kemp.
    Ms. Owen is survived by five daughters, Linda (Mitchell) Evans of Cottage Grove, Patricia (J.C.) Lowry of Gleason, Pamela (Ronnie) Warman of McKenzie, Diana (Louis) Barker of Southhaven, Mississippi, and Cynthia (Steven) Seamans of Chandler, Arizona; three sons, Tony (Karen) Owen of Salisbury, North Carolina, Kenneth Owen of Gleason, and Bobby (Brenda) Owen of Fulton, Mississippi; two brothers, George Atkins of Paris, and Jerry (Rosie) Atkins of Jonesboro, Georgia; twenty grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren.
 

George Herbert Shelton

    George Herbert Shelton, 68, died Saturday, April 26, at Regional Hospital of Jackson. Funeral services were Monday, April 28, at 2:00 p.m. at McKenzie Funeral Home with Bro. Brett Mebane officiating. Burial with honors by the Weakley County Sheriff's Department followed at Carroll Memorial Gardens in McKenzie.
    Mr. Shelton was born February 27, 1940 in Belleville, Illinois to the late George and Grace Daniels Shelton. He was a former police officer in Ridgely, a former Chief of Police in Tiptonville, and retired investigator for the Weakley County Sheriff's office with a total of 31 years of law enforcement, and attended Twin City Community Church in Hollow Rock. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Robert Shelton.
    Survivors include his wife, Vera Carroll Moore Shelton of Gleason; three daughters, Karen (George) Johnson of Dyersburg, Theresa (Ricky) Scott and Debbie Moore, both of McKenzie; five grandchildren, Leigh Ann Johnson and her fiance, Mark Dutton of Knoxville, Trae (Kayla) Johnson of Clarksville, Lauren Scott and Kaitlin Scott, both of McKenzie, and Mandi Johnson of Dyersburg; and one great-granddaughter, Addison Johnson of Clarksville.
    Memorials may be made to the Twin City Community Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 175, Bruceton, TN 38317.
 

Gladys Atkinson Nethery King

    Gladys Atkinson Nethery King, 96, of Martin, died Saturday, April 26, 2008, at VanAyer Manor Nursing Home in Martin. Funeral services for Mrs. King were held Sunday, April 27, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Houston Patrick officiated the services.
    Mrs. King was a homemaker and a member of Old Salem Methodist Church. She was born October 21, 1911 in Weakley County to the late M.A. Atkinson and Della White Atkinson. In addition to her parents, Mrs. King was also preceded in death by two husbands, Marion A. Nethery and Max King; a brother, Doyle Atkinson; and a sister, Zelma Harris.
    Mrs. King is survived by two sons, Bobbie (Nola Ann) Nethery of Martin, and Charles (Mary) Nethery of Martin; two grandchildren, Beth (Steve) Legens of Martin, and Brent (Linda) Nethery of Martin; and five great-grandchildren, Brady, Buddy, and Barkley Legens, and Cory and Marcy Nethery.
 

Herman Harrison, Jr.

    Herman Harrison, Jr., 78, of Dresden, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Private memorial services for Mr. Harrison will be held Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. at Gardner Cemetery in Martin.
    Mr. Harrison was a self-employed handyman. He was also a United States Army Veteran. He received the Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze campaign stars, Artillery, United National Service Medal, and Army Occupation Medal. Mr. Harrison was a Baptist by faith. He was born in Hickman County, Kentucky to the late Madie Cornwell Harrison and Herman Harrison, Sr.
    Mr. Harrison is survived by two daughters, Debbie Morris of Union City, and Lorie Harrison of Dresden; two sisters, Pauline Harrison of Decatur, Illinois, and Lois Essary of Dresden; and a brother, Bill Harrison of Dresden.
 

Jerry Winston Harkins

    Jerry Winston Harkins, 66, of the Ridge Trail Road in Kingston, died Saturday, April 26, 2008. Services were held Tuesday, at 8:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Evans Mortuary with Waylon Payne officiating. Interment will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the Roane Memorial Gardens with full military honors by the Roane County Military Memorial Honor Guard.
    His church family includes the Dyllis Baptist Church and Lee Village Baptist Church. He was a United States Navy Veteran, dedicated to the Jail Ministry, and formerly worked for the CIA.
    Survivors include his wife, Nancy Harkins of Kingston; two sons, Danny Harkins of Knoxville, and Mark Harkins; a daughter, Wanda Roberts of Dresden; two sisters, Penny Winery of Kansas City, Missouri, and Kathy Morin of Chattanooga; and seven grandchildren, Kristin Roberts, Jack Roberts and Katy Jo Roberts, all of Dresden, Danielle Harkins, Matthew Harkins, Karah Harkins, and Emily Harkins, all of Knoxville.
 

Kenneth M. Jones

    Kenneth M. Jones, 91, of Sedalia, Kentucky, died April 22, 2008 at his home. Funeral services for Mr. Jones were held Thursday, April 24, 2008, at 11:00 a.m.a t Murray Memorial Gardens Chapel with Rev. Eric Catron officiating. Burial followed in Murray Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
    Mr. Jones was born July 16, 1916 in Chokio, Minnesota to the late James W. and Lydia Spaulding Jones. He was a motel owner and manager as well as a WWII Naval Veteran serving in the American Theatre, Asiatic-Pacific, and the Philippine Liberation. He was a member of the local VFW and the American Legion. In addition to his parents, Mr. Jones was also preceded in death by a brother, James Jones; three sisters, Luella Kaye, Bertha Graham, and Stella Morley; and a granddaughter, Rebekah Catron.
    Mr. Jones is survived by a daughter, Kay S. Catron of Sedalia, Kentucky; a brother, Lloyd Jones of Windom, Minnesota; a sister, Irene Ahistrom of Los Angeles, California; a granddaughter, Lori Crawford of Mayfield, Kentucky; and three grandsons, Bill Catron of Orlando, Florida, Eric Catron of Dresden, and Andrew Catron (Tammy) of Dresden; and three great-grandchildren.
 

Mary Margaret Williams

    Mary Margaret Williams, 90, of Sharon, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at NHC Healthcare in Milan. Funeral services for Mrs. Williams were held Friday, April 25, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Gardner Funeral Home in Sharon. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. Dr. Jerry Summers, Rev. Paul Means, and Rev. David LeNeave officiated the services.
    Mrs. Williams was a homemaker. She was born November 30, 1917 in Weakley County. Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her husband, Carman Williams.
    Mrs. Williams is survived by two daughters, Donna (John) Winstead of Martin, and May (Lewis) Yarbrough of Milan; a sister, Rachel Boaz of Hollow Rock; two granddaughters, Betsy (Brad) Biggs of Jackson, and Diana (David) Dewberry of Lavinia; and two grandsons, Brad (Catie) Winstead of Brentwood, and Tim (Cyndi) Yarbrough of Bradford.
 

Walter Brian "W.B." Brown

    Walter Brian "W.B." Brown, 87, of Union City, died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at Golden Living Center in Union City. Funeral services for Mr. Brown will be held Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Jackson Funeral Home in Dukedom. Burial followed in Good Springs Cemetery in Dukedom. Rev. Ron Cox officiated the services.
    Mr. Brown was born July 24, 1920 in McConnell. He spent most of his childhood in the Dukedom area and was a 1938 graduate of Dresden High School. Drafted into the Army in World War II, he served in the 601st Graves Registration Company 1st Platoon, Quartermaster Corps, in the New Guinea and Luzon Campaigns as well as three small island operations. He earned a Bronze Star and was discharged in 1945 as a Staff Sergeant. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was active in the American Legion while living in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
    From 1945 until 1966 he worked for Union Carbide in Paducah, Kentucky at the USAEC Gaseous Diffusion Plant. From 1966 until 1983 Mr. Brown was employed by Arnold Research Organization in Tullahoma. He retired in 1983 and moved to South Fulton. He resided at the Golden Living Center in Union City since March 2007.
    He was actively engaged in the labor movement throughout his career holding several offices in the OCAW in Paducah and in the IUOE in Tullahoma. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fulton. Mr. Brown was born July 24, 1920 in Weakley County to the late Bill and Delcie (Clark) Brown. In addition to his parents, Mr. Brown was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Magdalene (McClain) Brown.
    Survivors include two sons, Garry Brown of Albuquerque, New Mexico and David Brown of Littleton, Colorado; two daughters, Gae Rue Johnson of Flagstaff, Arizona and Ginny Lou Bowen of O'Fallon, Illinois; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
 

William R. Dicus

    William R. Dicus, 79, of Sharon, died April 20, 2008, at Jackson Madison County Hospital. Funeral services for Mr. Dicus were held April 23, at 2:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Greenfield. Burial followed in Brock's Cemetery in Greenfield. Bobby Peal officiated the services.
    Mr. Dicus was a factory worker at Hubble Lighting for 20 years and retired on April 22, 2008. He was born February 1, 1929 in Greenfield to the late William Barney Dicus and Fannie Capps.
    Mr. Dicus is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Gammons; three sons, Danny R. Dicus of Bradford, William Randall Dicus of Sharon, and Steven Dicus of Sharon; a daughter, Phyllis Dicus of Sharon; a brother, Bennie Dycus of Greenfield; and two grandchildren.
