Charles "the hammer" Martel
(aka Savior of Europe)
Charles Martel (Charles the Hammer) (August 23, 686- October 22, 741)
was born in Herstal, in what is now Wallonia, Belgium, the illegitimate
son of Pepin II (635 or 640 - December 16, 714) and his concubine
Alpaida or Chalpaida.
Although he was Mayor of the Palace of the kingdom of the Franks, Martel
(Martel means "the Hammer") is best remembered for winning the Battle of
Tours (more correctly the Battle of Poitiers) in 732, which has been
characterized as the salvation of Europe from the Arab menace. Martel's
Frankish army defeated an Arab army fighting to spread Islam, which had
swept through southern Asia and north Africa, before conquering most of
the Iberian peninsula and much of southern France.
Although it took another two generations for the Franks to drive all the
Arab garrisons out of what is now France and across the Pyrenees,
Charles Martel's halt of the invasion of French soil turned the tide of
Islamic advance, and the unification of the Frankish kingdom under
Charles Martel, his son Pepin the Short, and his grandson Charlemagne
prevented the Umayyad kingdom from expanding over the Pyrenees.

first to Himiltrude (C5635611), then, in 770, he maried Desideria. In
771 he married Hildegarde (C1048897). Went on to marry for a fourth time
to Fastrada in 784 and for a fifth time to Luitgard in 794. He died at
Aix-la-Chapelle on January 28, 814.

one of the Bourbon princes was confined in the Washbourne's house and
was killed by Joan. She was considered to be selfish and ambitious.
After her death her ghost with a dagger in its hand was seen in the
murdered Prince's chamber at midnight on Saint Mary Magdalene's Eve.
Another tradition is that every year, when the Lammas moon was at its
full, Joan was seen riding in a silver boat drawn by four white swans
nine times around the moat, carrying a golden harp and singing
beautifully.
