A 10-run fifth inning proved to be the
difference on Monday afternoon as the Dresden Lady Lions
hung a 10-spot on the Lady Bulldogs on their way to a 14-4
win at Gleason.
In the bottom of the first inning, fans thought they might
have been seeing double as an Audrea Martin single scored
her twin sister Alicyn Martin to break the scoreless tie.
Erica Morgan then pushed the lead to 3-0 with a two-run
single.
But, starting in the top of the next inning, the Lady Lions
began to chip away at that lead as Kristin Childress stole
home to cut the lead to 3-1 after the top of the second
inning.
The following inning, the Lady Lions tied the game. After
Courtney McMillan scored on a Hannah Wade groundout, an RBI
single by Brooke Irvine tied the game at 3-3.
The Lady Lions took the lead in the top of the fourth inning
as McMillan made the score 4-3 with an RBI double.
Dresden put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth
inning. An Irvine RBI double was followed by a two-run
single from Holly Morris pushed the lead to four runs. A
two-run double from McMillan was followed by an RBI bunt by
Erica Glisson. Marlee Mason put the exclamation point on the
rally with a three-run homerun over the left field fence.
Childress scored on an error later in the inning to make the
score 14-3.

Greenfield caps perfect season with win over Union City |
|
The Greenfield Lady Jackets tennis team traveled to Union
City today for their last match of the 2009 season. The Lady
Jackets won every match and shut out Union City by a score
of 7-0. With the victory, Greenfield ends the regular season
with a perfect record of 12-0. Greenfield also earned their
second straight district title.
It is worth mentioning that each one of those 12 wins was by
the same score of 7-0. Lady Jackets #1 Katie McCall, No. 2
Mallory Robinson, No. 3 Summer Hoke, No. 4 Melissa
McCartney, and No. 5 Natalie Medling were unbeatable and won
every singles and doubles match they played.
The Lady Jacket’s No. 6 through No. 10 players also played
great this season. Hannah Rawls, Haley Perkins, Taylor
Hatcher, Emily Allen, and Hannah Mosley had a combined
singles record of 41-1 and were unbeaten in doubles.
As a team, the 10 Lady Jackets played 163 individual singles
and doubles matches in 2009 and won 162 of them.
“We are very proud of our girls for what they have
accomplished this season. After going 12-1 in 2008, winning
the district, and not losing any starters, we hoped to be
contenders again this season,” said Greenfield coach Bill
McCall. “Things just came together for us in 2009. Everyone
from our No. 1 to our No. 10 played well and we managed to
stay injury-free. To go undefeated in our district is a huge
accomplishment. For our top five girls to all go undefeated
is a tribute to their desire to win and to their great
attitudes. This season is definitely one that our team will
be proud of and will remember for a long time.”
In singles, Lady Jacket No. 1 Katie McCall handed Mary
Elizabeth Harpole (UC) an 8-0 defeat. No. 2 Mallory Robinson
(G) overwhelmed Anna Moore (UC) 8-3. At No. 3, it was Summer
Hoke (G) out playing Elizabeth Fuller (UC) 8-1. Melissa
McCartney (G) at No. 4 had no problems with Tkira Davis (UC)
8-1. Natalie Medling (G) at No. 5 prevailed over Gracie
Franken (UC) 8-1.
