With rain approaching on Tuesday, a pair
of local teams took legendary Cub Ernie Banks advice and
played two on Monday, as both games were district battles.
Greenfield got the double dip off to a good start for the
Yellowjackets with a 7-4 win over the Lions. In the
nightcap, the Lions came back to take a 3-1 win over
Greenfield.

DHS Lions 4
A second inning grand slam proved to be
the difference as the ’Jackets took the three-run win over
the Lions.
The Lions got on the board in the bottom of the first inning
as Matt Beaty crossed the plate on an Eric Evans double to
make the score 1-0.
But, the momentum swung completely in the Yellowjackets favor
in the top of the second inning as Dalton Potts connected
with the bases loaded, sending the pitch off the scoreboard
to give the Greenfield team a 4-1 lead.
Dresden threatened in the bottom of that frame, loading the
bases. But, a 1-2-3 double play ended the Lion threat.
The Lions were able to cut the lead down to one run n the
bottom of the fourth inning as Evans scored on an error.
Later in the inning, an RBI single by Hatchel cut the lead
down to 4-3 after four frames.
But, Greenfield responded with an RBI double from Potts in
the top of the fifth to push the lead back to two runs.
The Yellowjackets then pushed across two more in the top of
the seventh as Tyler Jones scored on an RBI single from
Potts, who then scored on a Daniel Ricketts double to put
Greenfield up by four going into the final half inning.
Dresden was able to get one run back in the bottom of the
seventh as Evans plated a run, but the Yellowjackets held
off the Lions to get the win.

Hudson named honorable mention AP All-American |
|
The
University of Tennessee at Martin’s Lester Hudson continues
to watch the postseason accolades roll in as he was named
honorable mention on the Associated Press’ All-American Team
today. This is the second consecutive year that Hudson has
been named on the AP All-American team, making him the only
men’s basketball player in program history to accomplish
that feat.
Hudson, who was also the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the
Year for a second consecutive season, became the first-ever
AP All-American Team member at UT Martin last season. After
one of the best all-around seasons in league history a year
ago, Hudson, the OVC preseason Player of the Year this
season, put together another season to remember this year.
Hudson averaged 27.5 points a contest, which was second
nationally (trailing only Davidson’s Stephen Curry). He
scored 20 or more points in the first 26 games of the
season, becoming the only player in Division I to accomplish
that feat. He has scored 30 or more points in 11 games this
season, including a career-high 42 points against Tennessee
Tech in the first round of the OVC Tournament. But Hudson
did more than just score, as he had 11 double-doubles this
season, and was one of just 13 players nationally who
average 5-plus point, 4-plus rebounds, 4-plus assists and
2-plus steals per game (teammate Delrico Lane is another one
of the 13 players).
Hudson also led the UT Martin team (and ranked third in the
OVC) in rebounding (7.9 rebounds/game), his 2.3 steals per
game ranks 21st nationally, his 3.3 3-pointers made/game was
12th and his 88.1 percent free throw percentage was the
12th-best nationally.
The Memphis native was named OVC Player of the Week seven
times this season (including five weeks in a row at one
point) and 11 times in his two-year career; both are OVC
records. Hudson is also one of only 10 finalists for the
Lowe’s Senior CLASS award, which is based on personal
qualities that define a complete student-athlete who
displays accomplishments across four pillars (classroom,
community, character and competition).
