Beuford Wayne Keene
Beuford Wayne Keene, 71, of Martin, died Monday, February 23,
2009, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Graveside services
for Mr. Keene were held Friday, February 27, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. at
East Side Cemetery in Martin. Bro. Bob Suggs and Bro. Nathaniel
Holmes officiated the services.
Mr. Keene was retired from the University of Tennessee at
Martin, where he taught in the English Department for 34 years. He
held a bachelor's degree in English from Arkansas Polytechnic
College (now Arkansas Tech University) and a master's degree in
English from Michigan State University. His professional
affiliations included the Tennessee Folklore Society and the
Tennessee Philological Association. Mr. Keene was a member of the
Church of God. He was born February 15, 1938 in Benton, Arkansas to
the late Clyde Keene and Lena Hudson.
Mr. Keene is survived by his wife, Judy Roberts Keene of
Martin; a stepson, Monte Belew of Knoxville; a brother, Manuel Keene
of Kuwait City, Kuwait; and a sister, Deborah Keene of Little Rock,
Arkansas. James Edwin Moon
James Edwin Moon, 93, of Como, died Tuesday, February 24,
2009, at Plumley Rehabilitation Center in Paris. Funeral services
for Mr. Moon were held Friday, February 27, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at
Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in Olive
Branch Cemetery, near Como. Bro. Kenny Carr, Bro. Tom Winchester,
and Bro. Tony Michael officiated the services.
Mr. Moon was a carpenter and a member of Jolley Springs
Baptist Church. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the United
States Army. Mr. Moon was born in Dresden to the late George and
Vercy Price Moon. In addition to his parents, Mr. Moon was also
preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Bertha Etta Castleman Moon;
three sisters, Christine Williams, Ruby Jones, and Dorothy Brooks;
five brothers, Woodrow Wilson Moon, S.A. Moon, Clifton Moon, John
Will Moon, and Talbot Moon; and a grandson, Eddie James Moon.
Mr. Moon is survived by a daughter, Lou Ann (Tom) Cartwright
of Como; a son, Talbot Moon of Portage, Indiana; a sister, Mary Lee
Brooks of Gleason; two brothers, Gerald Moon of Gleason, and Hulon
Moon of Paris; four grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Kathleen S. Bell
Kathleen S. Bell, 63, of South Fulton, died Thursday,
February 26, 2009, at Lourdes Hospital. Funeral services for Mrs.
Bell were held Saturday, February 28, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at
Hornbeak Funeral Chapel in Fulton. Burial followed in Eastside
Cemetery in Martin.
Mrs. Bell was a member of the South Fulton Baptist Church and
was active in the Gideons International. She was a homemaker and had
been a licensed practical nurse for the Parkway Regional Hospital,
Cane Creek Rehab and the former Fulton Hospital. Mrs. Bell was born
May 15, 1945 in Martin to the late Hobert and Irene (Bolin) Coffman,
and had lived in this area most of her life.
Mrs. Bell is survived by her husband of 25 years, Danny A.
Bell of South Fulton; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Ambre
Smith of Dresden; a stepson, David G. Bell of Monroe, Louisiana;
seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a sister, Rosalyn
Finney of Martin. Mattie Lee Story
Mattie Lee Story, 98, of McKenzie, died Saturday, February
28, 2009, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Story were held
Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Gallimore Funeral Home
Chapel in Gleason. Burial followed in Seminary Cemetery. Rev. Kenny
Carr officiated the services.
Mrs. Story was a homemaker and a member of Concord Baptist
Church. She was born September 4, 1910 in Greenfield to the late
Edward Monroe Grooms and Savannah Lee Galey. In addition to her
parents, Mrs. Story was also preceded in death by her husband, John
Thomas Story; and a son, Bill Story.
Mrs. Story is survived by two daughters, Mary Frances Barnett
of McKenzie, and Betty Roach of McKenzie; eleven grandchildren;
twenty-six great-grandchildren; and twenty
great-great-grandchildren.
Mello Virginia Arnold
Mello Virginia Arnold, 91, of Dresden, died Sunday, February
22, 2009, at Weakley County Rehab and Nursing Center in Dresden.
Funeral services for Mrs. Arnold were held Wednesday, February 25,
2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial
followed in Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Dr. Don McCulley officiated
the services.
Mrs. Arnold was a retired restaurant manager at the T-Room
and a member of Maplewood Baptist Church in Paris. She was born in
Hazel, Kentucky to the late John Aaron and Lula Bell Boyd Hopper. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Arnold was also preceded in death by
two husbands, Mr. Roy Abernathy and Mr. Jessie Ray Arnold.
Mrs. Arnold is survived by two stepdaughters, Sharlott (Jim)
Swanger of Dandridge, Tennessee, and Rhonda (Jim) Edwards of
Brighton, Tennessee; a stepson, Steve (Daria) Arnold of Knoxville;
two nephews, Kermit (Martha) Hopper of Dresden, and J.W. (Mertie
Sue) Kirkland of Martin; five step-grandchildren; and nine
step-great-grandchildren. Nancy Lee Shane
Nancy Lee Shane, 76, of Greenfield, died Tuesday, February
17, 2009, at Regional Hospital in Jackson. Funeral services for Ms.
Shane were held Saturday, February 21, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at
Williams Funeral Home in Greenfield. Pastor David Reid officiated
the services.
Ms. Shane was born September 14, 1932, to the late Clarence
and Mossie Shane. She was a graduate of Weakley County Training
School, Martin. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in
death by a son, Thomas "Jaybird" Shane; two granddaughters, Ieshia
McDonald and Charlotte Shane; and two sisters, Luvanie Brazier and
Mary Frances.
Survivors include a son, Antonio Shane of Greenfield; a
daughter, Nina Shane of Martin; three sisters, Anna Belle Shane and
Sandra (Robert) Skinner of Greenfield, and Clare (Robert) Kelly of
Detroit, Michigan; eight brothers, Joseph (Faye) Shane and Leo (the
late Joeline) Shane of Lansing, Michigan, William (Linda) Shane of
Kankee, Illinois, Arnold (Jeanette) Coleman of St. Rose, Louisiana,
Terry (the late Cathy) Shane, Steve (Dorothy) Shane, Carl Shane, and
Mitchell (Pam) Shane, of Greenfield; four grandchildren, Elise,
Gabriel, Latoya (Terrence) and Angelia; three great-grandchildren;
and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Nellie May Johnson Callis
Nellie May Johnson Callis, 96, of Martin, died Wednesday,
February 25, 2009, at VanAyer Manor Nursing and Rehab Center in
Martin. Funeral services for Mrs. Callis were held Saturday,
February 28, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin.
Burial followed in Eastview Cemetery in Union City. Rev. Terry
Griffin and Rev. Wilkey Jones officiated the services.
Mrs. Callis was a supervisor for Brown Shoe Company for 34
years and a member of Cypress Creek Baptist Church. She was born
December 15, 1912 in Jonesboro, Arkansas to the late Omar Johnson
and Christine Tompkins Johnson. In addition to her parents, Mrs.
Callis was also preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Callis.
Mrs. Callis is survived by a son, James E. Callis of Martin;
a daughter, Marilyn Ballas of Fulton, Kentucky; and five
grandchildren. Ricky Verdell McAbee, Sr.
Ricky Verdell McAbee, Sr., 45, died Thursday, February 26,
2009, in Sharon. Funeral services for Mr. McAbee were held Saturday,
February 28, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Brummitt Funeral Home in
McKenzie. Burial followed in New Valley Cemetery in Gleason.
Mr. McAbee was born September 1, 1963, to the late Charles
McAbee, Sr. and the late Barbara June Reed Bailey. He was also
preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Huguley. He was an auto
mechanic and also a member of Beech Springs Baptist Church.
Mr. McAbee is survived by his wife, Karen McAbee of Sharon;
one daughter, Cara (Robert) Basulto of Las Vegas, Nevada; two sons,
Ricky McAbee, Jr. and Jeffrey McAbee, both of Sharon; two brothers,
Charles (Charlotte) McAbee, Jr. and Allen (Nancy) McAbee, both of
Gleason; and one granddaughter, Isabella Basulto.
Robert T. Johnson
Robert T. Johnson, 88, of Sharon, died Friday, February 27,
2009, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Funeral services
for Mr. Johnson were held Monday, March 2, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at
the Sharon Church of Christ. Burial followed in East Side Cemetery
in Martin. Bro. Larry Powers officiated the services.
Mr. Johnson formerly worked for Mar-Tenn Hams and retired
from the City of Martin. He was a member of the Sharon Church of
Christ. Mr. Johnson was born November 26, 1920 in McEwen, Tennessee,
to the late George Alvin Johnson and Odie Hester Nickles Johnson. In
addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was also preceded in death by
his wife, Juanita Stanley Johnson; a son-in-law, James Tate; and two
grandchildren, Polly Johnson and Michael Mansfield.
Mr. Johnson is survived by two sons, Bob (Sandra) Johnson of
Sharon, and Larry (Ruth) Johnson of Florida; two daughters, Brenda
(Frankie) Mansfield of Sharon, and Betty Tate of Jackson; a sister,
Annie Ruth Guy of Union City; eight grandchildren; and thirteen
great-grandchildren. Thomas Benjamin Rawls
Thomas Benjamin Rawls, 90, of Cranston, Rhode Island, died
Thursday, February 19, 2009, at Bride Brook Health and
Rehabilitation Center in Niantic, Connecticut. He was the husband of
the late Viola (Autiell) Dombroski Rawls and stepfather to the late
Robert S. Dombroski. Funeral services for Mr. Rawls were held
Friday, February 27, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home in
Cranston, Rhode Island. Burial followed in St. Anne Cemetery in
Cranston.
Mr. Rawls was employed by the United States Postal Service
and retired in 1985. A Veteran of WWII and the Korean War, he served
over 21 years in the United States Navy. Mr. Rawls was born
September 23, 1918, in Dresden, to the late Benjamin Harrison Rawls
and Alva Marie (Stoker) Rawls.
Mr. Rawls is survived by two step-grandchildren, Stan R.
Dombroski of Guilford, Connecticut, and Ian A. Dombroski of
Baltimore, Maryland; and brothers, Joseph Stoker Rawls of Covington,
Louisiana, and Franklin Tolliver Rawls of Webster, New York.
Troy Lee Boswell
Troy Lee Boswell, 71, of Dresden, died Monday, February 23,
2009, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. Graveside services
for Mr. Boswell were held Thursday, February 26, 2009, at 11:00 a.m.
at Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Joe Eaton officiated the
services.
Mr. Boswell was a retired City of Dresden employee and a
veteran of the United States Army, having served in Korea. He was a
Baptist by faith. Mr. Boswell was born in Steele, Missouri. He was
preceded in death by his mother, Ina Boswell.
Mr. Boswell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Spurgeon
Boswell of Dresden; a daughter, Tracy Smith of Dresden; four sons,
Larry Boswell of Dresden, Mike Boswell of Dresden, Tony Boswell of
Dresden, and Ronnie Boswell of Dresden; four sisters, Sharon Minnick
of Obion, Linda Minnick of Troy, Viola Boswell of Arkansas, and
Wanda Minnick of Hornbeak; three brothers, Hershel Minnick of
Hornbeak, Bobby Joe Minnick of Glass, Tennessee, and Johnny Minnick
of Lake County; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
