Dorothy Sue Brewer Snyder
Dorothy Sue Brewer Snyder, 79, of Chicago, Illinois, died
Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Little Sister of the Poor in Chicago.
Funeral services for Ms. Snyder were held Sunday, March 22, 2009, at
2:00 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home Chapel in Sharon. Burial followed
in Tansil Cemetery. Bro. Bobby Peal officiated the services.
Ms. Snyder was born September 3, 1929 in Martin.
Survivors include four sons, David Goad of Chicago, Illinois,
Gary Goad of Chicago, Illinois, Paul Goad of Chicago, Illinois, and
Robert Goad of Chicago, Illinois; a brother, Duane Brewer of Martin;
thirteen grandchildren; and twenty-two great-grandchildren.
George Conner Thomas, Jr.
George Conner Thomas, Jr. died March 14, 2009. He was born
November 3, 1918, in Dresden. He was predeceased by his father,
George C. Thomas, who was a family physician in Greenfield; his
mother, Georgia Shannon Thomas, who was a teacher and high school
boys' basketball coach and dorm mother at UTMB; and a brother,
Shannon Thomas. During World War II, he was an officer for the
Army's 112th Calvary regiment that was deployed to the Pacific
front, where his unit made several landings, with particularly
fierce fighting in the Philippines. He was awarded a Bronze Star for
his bravery in combat. He mustered out of the Army a major and
enlisted in the National Guard, where he served an additional
twenty-five years, retiring as lieutenant colonel. After the war, he
finished his degree at the University of Tennessee and entered law
school at UT, where he graduated first in his class. He was elected
and served as Weakley County Judge from 1950 until 1958. He then
built a successful law practice that eventually included David
Welles and his two sons, George C. Thomas III and Tommy Thomas, as
partners. He also served as field representative for Congressman
Robert (Fats) Everett and Ed Jones for over 25 years. He married
Mary Sue Irvine in 1946 and after her death in 1985, he married
Julia Lovell. Throughout his life, he loved his church, family,
horses, Dresden, the University of Tennessee (where he served on the
Athletic Board), the St. Louis Cardinals, golf and the Democratic
Party. He was a member of Dresden First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Julia; and his sons, Tommy and
George III. His son, Tommy, serves as the District Attorney General
for Weakley and Obion Counties and he and his wife, Paula, live in
Dresden. George III is a Board of Governors professor at Rutgers
University School of Law. George III and wife, Gretchen, reside in
Warren, New Jersey. He is also survived by a grandson, Matthew
Thomas, who is a Junior at UTM. Additional survivors include:
stepchildren, Sherry Motley and Greg (Janet) Smith;
step-grandchildren, Jinny (Scott) Killebrew, Molly Martin, Katelyn
and Kevin Smith; step-great-grandchildren, Callen and Carolina
Killebrew, and Lauren Martin. He is also survived by sisters-in-law,
Edna Algea, Billie O'Neal, Maxine (Gerald) Wallis, Elnora (Reau)
Graves; and brother-in-law, Terry (Doris) Lovell.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at
Dresden First United Methodist Church. Burial followed with full
Military Honors at Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Bowlin Funeral Home,
Inc. was in charge of the services.

Jack Reed Hays
Jack Reed Hays, 50, of Martin, formerly of Paris, died
Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at his home. Funeral services for Mr. Hays
were held Friday, March 20, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at LeDon Chapel of
Ridgeway Funeral Home in Paris. Burial followed in Memorial Cemetery
in Paris. Kenny Carr and Brady Weldon officiated the services.
Mr. Hays was a licensed contractor. He formerly worked with
his father, Jack Hays at TN Asphalt. He was the former owner and
operator of Four Seasons Tanning in Paris and current owner of the
Sun Shop in Martin. Mr. Hays was a member of Long Heights Baptist
Church in McKenzie. He graduated in 1976 from Henry County High
School and attended Murray State University for 2 years. Mr. Hays
was born October 23, 1958 in Paris.
Mr. Hays is survived by his parents, Jack Rufe Hays and
Bettie Reed Hays of Paris; two sisters, Debbie (Tim) Doster of
McKenzie, and Jackie (Paul) Bickel of Louisville, Kentucky; a
brother, Tom Hays of Jefferson, Georgia; and two nieces, Katie and
Claire Bickel.
Joel Timothy Strickland
Joel Timothy Strickland, 74, of Dresden, died Wednesday,
March 11, 2009, at his residence in Clearwater, Florida. Graveside
services for Mr. Strickland were held Saturday, March 21, 2009, at
1:00 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Latham. David
Hellman officiated the services.
Mr. Strickland was a truck driver and a Baptist by faith. He
was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Mr. Strickland was preceded in
death by a son, Billy Ray Strickland.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Evelyn Morris
Strickland of Clearwater, Florida; a stepson, Buddy Crawford of
Dunedin, Florida; and one step-grandson, Brandon Strickland of
Fulton, Kentucky.
Rebecca Nell (Beh) King
Rebecca Nelle (Beh) King, 89, of Dresden, died on Friday,
March 13, 2009, at Adams Place Assisted Living in Murfreesboro,
Tennessee.
She was an active member of the Dresden First United
Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was born on
June 4, 1919, in Palmersville, Tennessee, to the late Monroe
Alderdice and Zula Cook McClain. After growing up through the Great
Depression and sending her husband off to North Africa and Italy for
WWII, Mrs. King reared her family as a merchant and devoted member
of the Dresden community. Mrs. King was preceded in death by her
husband, Fred Harrison King, and her parents.
She is survived by her daughter, Freda King Frazer, and
son-in-law, Schley J. (Slick) Frazer, of Christiana, Tennessee. She
is also survived by her grandchildren, Carl Harrison Frazer
(Tabitha) of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Schley Jennings Frazer, Jr. (Viktoria)
of Zug, Switzerland; and her Frazer great-grandchildren, Rebecca
Grace, Samuel Harrison, Schley Jennings III, and Lileannah Susette.
Funeral services were held at Dresden First United Methodist
Church on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. |
