Charlie Leon "Cotton" Powers
Charlie Leon "Cotton" Powers, 90, of Sharon, died Thursday,
January 15, 2009, at VanAyer Manor and Rehab in Martin. Funeral
services for Mr. Powers were held Friday, January 16, 2009, at 11:00
a.m. at Gardner Funeral Home Chapel in Sharon. Burial followed in
Tansil Cemetery. Larry Powers officiated the services.
Mr. Powers was a retired farmer. He was born April 11, 1918
in Weakley County to the late Charlie Brown Powers and Lois Edwards
Powers. In addition to his parents, Mr. Powers was also preceded in
death by his wife, Shirley Powers; and six brothers.
Mr. Powers is survived by a daughter, Bettye Jane (Charles
E.) Moore of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; a son, Earl Wayne Powers of
Kenton; a sister, Sue Damron of Lansing, Michigan; five brothers,
Bobby Powers of Dresden, Gay Powers of Lansing, Michigan, Jimmy
Powers of Lansing, Michigan, Ray Powers of Lansing, Michigan, and
William S. Powers of Greenfield; nine grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren. Ellen "Hazel" Parker
Ellen "Hazel" Parker, 64, of Dresden, died Thursday, January
15, 2009, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis. Funeral
services for Mrs. Parker were held Sunday, January 18, 2009, at 2:00
p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in
Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Dr. Don McCulley officiated the
services.
Mrs. Parker was a receiver and stocker for Wal-Mart in
Martin. She was a member of Fairhaven Baptist Church in Crenshaw,
Mississippi, and a strong support of the Baptist Children's Homes.
Mrs. Parker was born in Marks, Mississippi to the late Theo and
Ellen Beatrice Parker Collums.
Mrs. Parker is survived by her husband, Mr. Ronald Parker of
Dresden; three sons, David Parker of White Bluff, Tennessee, Bill
Parker of Dresden, and John Parker of Dresden; a sister, Shirley
Mayeaux of Prairieville, Louisiana; two brothers, Aubrey Collums of
Marks, Mississippi, and Carl "Peewee" Collums of Crenshaw,
Mississippi; and four grandchildren, Carrie Reagan of Paris, Forrest
Parker of Dresden, and Johnathan and Lucas Parker, both of Martin.
Franklin D. Johnson
Frank Johnson, 73, formerly of Sharon, passed away at his
home in Melbourne, Florida on Sunday, January 11, 2009.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy L. Johnson of Melbourne,
Florida; sister, Helen Baker; daughter, Sherry Jones; stepson and
daughter-in-law, Edward and Jana Payne, all from Sharon; daughter
and son-in-law, Cindy and Ricky Adams of Smyrna; stepdaughter and
son-in-law, Kelly and Tim Evans of Dresden; stepson, Richard Payne
of Dyersburg; and stepdaughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Thomas
Lehnerz of Melbourne, Florida, with whom he lived for the past six
years.
Additional survivors include fifteen grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and
Eliza Johnson; and his son-in-law, Allen Jones.
Mr. Johnson was a long time truck driver and drove for Doyle
Sims & Sons Truck Line until he retired.
A graveside service at Woodlawn Cemetery, located in Sharon,
will take place on Saturday, January 24, 2009, at 2:00 p.m.
Linda Sue Bodkin
Linda Sue Bodkin, 62, of Greenfield, died Tuesday, January
13, 2009, at her home. Funeral services for Ms. Bodkin were held
Saturday, January 17, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home
in Greenfield. Burial followed in Poplar Springs Cemetery. David
Lancaster officiated the services.
Ms. Bodkin was born January 1, 1947 in Martin to the late
John Marvin Bodkin and Minnie Pearl Vinsett.
Ms. Bodkin is survived by a brother, Johnny Bodkin.
Maxine Wash Hunt
Maxine Wash Hunt, 87, of Dresden, died Monday, January 19,
2009, at Weakley County Rehab and Nursing Center in Dresden. Funeral
services for Mrs. Hunt will be held Thursday, January 22, 2009, at
1:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial will
follow in Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Jim Calhoun and Bro.
Harrell E. Phillips will officiate the services.
Mrs. Hunt was a Branch Office Manager for Weakley County
Municipal Electric System and a member of the Dresden First United
Methodist Church. She was born February 28, 1921 in Weakley County
to the late Willie J. "Bill" Wash and Ethelene Carr Wash Chadwick.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hunt was also preceded in death by
her husband, Mr. Joe Campbell Hunt.
Mrs. Hunt is survived by a son, Bob (Beverly) Hunt of Union
City; a sister, Willie Marilyn "Jackie" Parks of Louisville,
Kentucky; two grandchildren, Jeff Chandler (Amy) Hunt of Owensboro,
Kentucky, and Jim Hays (Christine) Hunt of Union City; and five
great-grandchildren, Joseph, Jacob, and Jenna Hunt of Owensboro,
Chloe Smithson and Ethan Hunt of Union City.
William Ralph Nelms
William Ralph Nelms, 57, of Dresden, died Wednesday, January
14, 2009, at his home in Latham. Funeral services for Mr. Nelms were
held Saturday, January 17, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home
Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in Pisgah Cemetery in Dresden.
Rev. H.B. Fields officiated the services.
Mr. Nelms was a retired factory employee for Southern Source
and a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church in Dresden. He was a
1969 graduate of Martin High School and President of the Future
Farmers of America while in high school. Mr. Nelms was born July 3,
1951 in Weakley County to the late William Thomas "Bill" and Ona
Newsom Nelms.
Mr. Nelms is survived by his wife, Mrs. Vicki Hill
Hollingsworth Nelms of Dresden; two daughters, Ginger (Jimmie)
Randolph of Dresden, and Amy Elise Oliver of Dresden; a brother,
David T. Nelms of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and two grandchildren,
Jesse James and Grant Thomas Randolph, both of Dresden.
