Adell Ross Mansfield
Funeral services for Adell Ross Mansfield were held at
Gallimore Funeral Home in Gleason, TN on Saturday, January 10, 2009
at 1:00 p.m. Visitation was on Friday, January 9th from 5:00 to 8:00
p.m. She was a member of the Matheny Grove Primitive Baptist Church.
Her precious remains were buried in the Church's cemetery, near
Dresden. Bro. Ed Long officiated.
Adell Ross Mansfield was born August 19, 1911 in the Chestnut
Glade Community, KY. She was the daughter of the late Elder John
Henry and Bertha Cummings Ross. She had two brothers, Robert Ross
and Finis Lee Ross. She loved, admired, and respected her brothers
and their wives Eva and Lil. She took much pride that they were in
her family.
Mrs. Mansfield, 97, passed away January 7th, at 10:30 p.m. to
the sorrow of all those who knew and loved her. She lived a full and
long life until the age of 86. At that time, she was diagnosed with
Alzheimer's. The last 11 years of her life was a time of sadness and
struggle for Mrs. Mansfield and her family. She was lovingly cared
for at the Weakley County Nursing Home in Dresden. Her daughter,
Sherry Ross of Greenfield, spent many days visiting and comforting
her Mother.
Mrs. Mansfield spent the first 49 years of her life being a
wife and homemaker, raising seven children. She and her husband Beck
started their marriage with a horse and buggy. During the early
years of their life together they lived without the necessity of
running water and electricity, as many did during those times. At
49, she began a working career outside the home. She made the
comment that after 29 years of raising children, she liked her new
job so much, she would have worked for free. She referred to herself
as "a bird out of a cage." Mrs. Mansfield spent many happy years
employed by Henry I. Siegel in Gleason. She also worked for 20 years
in Dresden as a nursing assistant at the Hillview Nursing Home. She
equally enjoyed caring for the residents and working with fellow
employees. She ended her working career at age 80.
Adell was known by friends and family as a peace-maker and a
caregiver. She was a caring and loving woman. Everyone was welcome
in her home. When she was a young girl of 11, she lost her Mother to
typhoid fever. After she married, and with a house full of young
children, she nursed her maternal grandmother in her home during
Grandmother Cummings' final illness. Again in 1950, with seven
children of her own, Adell cared for her dying father, who lived
with the family, until his passing. Mrs. Mansfield was a strong
minded and willed woman. She overcame adversity as though it didn't
exist and looked life fully in the face conquering things that she
would say, "Life would be just as well without."
She was married to Vester (Beck) Mansfield for 75 years, upon
his passing in 2001. The couple lived on Mill Street in Gleason for
most of their married life, where they were known as Mam-Maw and
Pa-Beck. They were staunch Democrats; Pa-Beck regularly transported
Weakley County residents to the polls on election day. Adell
survived Beck, his eight brothers and sisters, and their wives and
husbands.
She is survived by her sons Joe Bryan Mansfield (Clareda) of
McKenzie and Bobby Lee Mansfield (Patsy) of Dresden; three
daughters, twins, Sherry Kay Ross (Paul) of Greenfield and Jerry
Faye Sandvig of Ft. Myers, Florida, and Judith Ann Cody (Tom) of
Huntsville, Alabama; and her brother Finis Lee Ross of Dresden. Mrs.
Mansfield was preceded in death by two adult sons, John Ross
Mansfield and Billy Franklyn Mansfield, and her brother Robert Ross
of Seattle, Washington.
She was loved by 19 Grandchildren, 26 Great Grandchildren,
and 11 Great Great Grandchildren. Her greatest joy was welcoming all
for family meals.
She was a unique, joyful, and tender-hearted woman. She will
be missed by many.
"You can't always see the bird singing, but if you listen
with your heart you can always hear his song."
