Carol Marie Reynolds
Carol Marie Reynolds, 60, of Sharon, died Sunday, February 1,
2009, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Reynolds were held
Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Sidonia Baptist Church.
Burial followed in Alamo Cemetery in Rives. Bro. Fady Al-Hagal and
Bro. Tommy Harrison officiated the services.
Mrs. Reynolds worked in manufacturing. She was born March 10,
1948 in Lexington, Tennessee to the late F.M. and Annie Bartholemew.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Reynolds was also preceded in death
by two daughters, Lisa Marie Jones and Diane Reynolds; and a son,
Jerry Reynolds.
Mrs. Reynolds is survived by her husband, Walter Wayne
Reynolds of Sharon; a daughter, Regina (Ricky) Harrison of Sidonia;
a son, Wayne (Debbie) Reynolds, Jr. of Martin; two sisters, Nancy
Laverne (Richard) Allen of Sharon, and Johnnie Ann (Rickey) Klutts
of Sharon; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Cary L. Bills
Cary L. Bills, 43, of Martin, died Friday, January 30, 2009,
at his home. Funeral services for Mr. Bills were held Monday,
February 2, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in
Greenfield. Burial followed in Tansil Cemetery in Sharon. Terry
Griffin and David Rogers officiated the services.
Mr. Bills attended Bible Union Church. He was born August 9,
1965 in Memphis.
Mr. Bills is survived by his wife, Laura Bills of Martin; two
sons, Cary L. Bills, II of Martin, and Casey Bills of Martin; two
stepchildren, Kelsie Winstead and John Paul Winstead of Dresden; his
father, Larry Bills of Lexington, Tennessee; his mother, Roma Yarber
Sims of Martin; a sister, Kim Bills of Martin; a brother, Chris
Bills of Martin; two stepsisters, Bonnie Roberts of Martin, and
Sandra Valley; and three stepbrothers, Brandon Stone of Henderson,
Kentucky, Billy Sims and Bobby Sims of Martin.
Gene Peery
Gene Peery, 75, of Springville, died Wednesday, February 4,
2009, at Henry County Regional Hospital in Paris. Funeral services
for Mr. Peery were held Friday, February 6, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at
Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed in Cates Cemetery in
Martin. Rev. Lynn Walker officiated the services.
Mr. Peery was a retired tool and die operator for Miller &
Hubbell Lighting. He was born August 28, 1933 in Weakley County to
the late Wayne Peery and Claudine Moon Peery. In addition to his
parents, Mr. Peery was also preceded in death by two sons, Jimmy
Peery and Michael Peery; and a daughter, Pat Peery.
Mr. Peery is survived by his companion and caregiver, Betty
Crocker Smith; a son, Robert Wayne Peery of Camden; a daughter,
Rhonda Jean Mills of Martin; and a sister, Betty (Richard) Kee of
Grand Junction, Tennessee.
Grace Paschall Chappell
Grace Paschall Chappell, 90, of Martin, died Thursday,
February 5, 2009, at VanAyer Manor Nursing Center in Martin.
Graveside services for Mrs. Chappell were held Sunday, February 8,
2009, at 2:00 p.m. at East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Roger Lipe
officiated the services.
Mrs. Chappell was retired from Merit Clothing Company and was
a member of Central Baptist Church. She was born April 17, 1918 in
Weakley County to the late Hubert Paschall and Ullen Baker Paschall.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Chappell was also preceded in death
by her husband, James Emerson Chappell; and a son, Jimmy Chappell.
Mrs. Chappell is survived by a daughter-in-law, Linda
Chappell of Cookeville, Tennessee; and one granddaughter, Tracy Lynn
Davies of Pertoria, Africa.
Milburn B. (M.B.) Conner
Milburn B. (M.B.) Conner, 94, of South Fulton, died Tuesday,
February 3, 2009, at Autumn Healthcare of Cambridge in Cambridge,
Ohio. Masonic services were held Thursday, February 5, at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services for Mr. Conner were held Friday, February 6, 2009,
at 11:00 a.m. at Hornbeak Funeral Chapel in Fulton. Burial followed
in New Hope Cemetery in Ruthville.
Mr. Conner was a retired farmer and former employee of Swift
& Co. He was a 1933 graduate of South Fulton High School and was a
member of the Roberts Lodge #172. Mr. Conner was born July 16, 1914
in Weakley County and had lived in this area all of his life. He was
preceded in death by his parents, Lula (Burke) and Joseph Welch
Conner.
Mr. Conner is survived by his wife, Madge (Nanney) Conner of
South Fulton, whom he married August 10, 1935; a son and
daughter-in-law, Jim and Warneta Conner of Brentwood; a daughter and
son-in-law, Annette and Tom Parnell of Cambridge, Ohio; five
grandchildren, Larry Parnell, Joe Parnell, Penny Parnell, Alex
Conner, and Chad Conner; three great-grandchildren, Kelly Parnell,
Brandy Simpson, and Ryan Parnell; and a sister, Mary Nell Pease of
Franklin Park, Illinois.
Paul W. Gurley
Paul W. Gurley, 76, of Union City, died Sunday, February 1, 2009,
at Union City Manor. Burial was in Meridian Cemetery in Greenfield.
Mr. Gurley was a laborer. He was born August 31, 1932 in Bath
Spring, Arkansas to the late Elige Gurley and Mary E. Creesy.
Mr. Gurley is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Gurley) Cox of
Lansing, Michigan.
Ruby Cole Barton
Ruby Cole Barton passed away on February 5, 2009, in Minden,
Louisiana, near her home in Shreveport. She was born April 4, 1918,
to parents William T. Cole II and Sarah Fulton Cole, in the Forest
Dale community, Neshoba County, Mississippi, near the town of
Philadelphia.
Mrs. Barton was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years,
Wade Barton; son, Wade Cole Barton; brother, MacWillie Cole; and
sisters, Doris Paterson, Sudie Dees, and Sarah Web. She is survived
by her son, Thomas Barton, and wife Catherine; granddaughters Denise
Barton Shedrick, and husband Steve, Heather Barton Linnevers, and
husband, Tom, Aimee Barton Thompson, and Kristin Barton Wren, and
husband, Chris; and six great-grandchildren.
A longtime resident of Martin, Mrs. Barton and her husband
were active members of the First United Methodist Church of Martin.
She was a graduate of Mississippi University for Women, formerly
Mississippi State College for Women, and later an instructor there.
She was a third grade teacher for much of her life, teaching in
Mississippi, Arkansas, and Tennessee, at both Martin and Union City.
She was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron, Alpha Delta Kappa, American
Association of University Women, and Fine Arts Club, as well as a
member of the DAR Colonial Dames XVII Century, and Magna Charta
Dames.
Funeral services and interment were held February 9, 2009, at
Cook's Chapel United Methodist Church, near Philadelphia,
Mississippi.
Ruthann Marie Freeman
Ruthann Marie Freeman, 58, of Dresden, died Monday, February
2, 2009, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Freeman were held
Thursday, February 5, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home
Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in Sunset Cemetery in Dresden.
Bro. David Freeman officiated the services.
Mrs. Freeman was a retired hairdresser and bus driver for 28
years. She was also a member of the Dresden Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Freeman was born July 13, 1950 in Charlotte, Michigan (Eaton
County) to the late John Henry and Arline Ruth Taylor Buck.
Mrs. Freeman is survived by her husband, Mr. Harry Ben
Freeman of Dresden; two daughters, Karen Leeann (James) Nanney of
Cox Creek, Kentucky, and Kimberly Marie (Marty) Hastings of
Lafayette, Louisiana; a son, Kevin John (Tracie) Freeman of Dresden;
a brother, David John (Patti) Buck of Holt, Michigan; and five
grandchildren, Anna and Charles Nanney, Garrett and A.J. Hastings,
and Harry Joe Freeman.
Valessie Harrison
Valessie Harrison, 96, of Palmersville, died Tuesday,
February 3, 2009, at Weakley County Rehab and Nursing Center in
Dresden. Funeral services for Mrs. Harrison were held Friday,
February 6, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in
Dresden. Burial followed in Old Bethel Cemetery in Palmersville.
Bro. Joey Johnson officiated the services.
Mrs. Harrison was a housewife and a member of Old Bethel
Missionary Baptist Church. She was born March 6, 1912 in Weakley
County to the late James Monroe McClain and Otella True McClain. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Harrison was also preceded in death by
her husband, Mr. James F. Harrison; two sons, James Franklin
Harrison and Bobby Ray Harrison; and a brother, Vethro "Bow"
McClain.
Mrs. Harrison is survived by four daughters, Eloise (Paul)
Griffith of Palmersville, Sandra (Jimmy) Puckett of Palmersville,
Kay (Jerry) Wheeler of Wingo, Kentucky, and Faye (John) Hargrove of
Hazel Park, Michigan; a son, Glenn (Shelia) Harrison of Sedalia,
Kentucky; two sisters, Vivian Colley of Metropolis, Illinois, and
Viola (Aubrey) Cruz of South Fulton; nine grandchildren; thirteen
great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Virginia P. Brewer
Virginia P. Brewer, 62, of Palmersville, died Friday, January
23, 2009, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Mrs. Brewer were held Saturday, January 24, 2009, at
2:00 p.m. at Gallimore Funeral Home in Gleason. Burial followed in
Old Bethel Cemetery in Palmersville. Bro. Nathan Horton officiated
the services.
Mrs. Brewer was a retired office manager and a member of Old
Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Palmersville. She was born
November 9, 1946 in Gleason. Mrs. Brewer was preceded in death by
her mother, Ellen Phillips Hargrove; her stepfather, C.L. Raymond
Hargrove; and two sons, Ronald Brewer and Donald Brewer.
Mrs. Brewer is survived by her husband, Bill Brewer; a son,
Shane Brewer of Gleason; a daughter, Nanette Copeland of
Palmersville; a brother, Rick Hargrove of Dresden; a sister, Sarah
Hargrove Quinn of Dresden; and two grandchildren.
William I. (Bill) Butler
William I. (Bill) Butler was born in Weakley County on May
22, 1919, the son of the late Horace Franklin and Gladys Waggener
Butler.
Mr. Butler had served in the United States Army Air Corps
27th Bomb Group in the 454th Ordinance. The 27th Bomb Group was the
only U.S. Air Force unit in history to fly as an infantry regiment,
earning its members the CIB (Combat Infantryman Badge). He was one
of the many POW's that walked "The Bataan Death March," the forcible
transfer of some 70,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war who
were captured following their surrender on the Bataan Peninsula. He
was decorated with the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and Good
Conduct Medals.
After returning home, Mr. Butler earned his Bachelor of
Science degree in agriculture from the University of Tennessee at
Knoxville. He worked for PET Milk Company, before accepting a post
at the University of Tennessee Extension Service as a 4-H Assistant
County Agent for Hardin County and was promoted to County Agent,
from which he retired. He was a member of the First Baptist Church
in Savannah, Tennessee, the Lions Club, and the Disabled American
Veterans. In addition to Savannah, he had also lived in Mayfield,
Kentucky, Camden, Martin, and Paris, Tennessee.
Mr. Butler died on Sunday, February 8, 2009, at the age of
89. Funeral services for Mr. Butler were held Tuesday, February 10,
2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah. Burial
followed in Lexington City Cemetery.
He is survived by his daughter, Paula Butler Jones of
Pickwick Dam, Tennessee; a sister, Minnie Parham of Dresden; and two
grandchildren, Christopher E. Jones and Clinton D. Jones.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Butler was also preceded in
death by his first wife, Mary Katherine Rhodes on March 10, 1986;
his second wife, Hazel Stanford Blevins on April 14, 2004; two
brothers; and two sisters.
William Richard Legens
William Richard Legens, 59, of Hartford, Alabama, died
Monday, February 2, 2009. Services were held Wednesday, February 4,
2009, at the Shepherd Funeral Home in Hartford, Alabama. Burial was
in the Fort Mitchell National Cemetery with Naval Military Honors.
Mr. Legens was born September 29, 1949 in Weakley County, the
son of the late William Carlee and Myrtle Lee Legens. He was a
certified long haul driver in the trucking industry. Mr. Legens was
a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In
addition to his parents, Mr. Legens was also preceded in death by
two sisters, Nora Pickler and Ruth Whitney; and two brothers,
Gilbert "Mutt" Legens and Bill Legens.
Mr. Legens is survived by his wife, Shirley Legens of
Hartford, Alabama; two sons, William Richard Legens, Jr. of
McKenzie, and Randall Dale Legens of the U.S. Army; one
stepdaughter, Zondra Darlene Barton; two stepsons, Audie James
Barton and Clinton Victor Barton, all of Alabama; three sisters,
Jean Perry of Gleason, Dorothy Farrar of Dresden, and Christine
Allen of Dresden; one brother, Stephen Legens of Dresden; one
grandson; twenty-seven step-grandchildren; and eleven
step-great-grandchildren.
