Angeline Mary Robey
Angeline Mary Robey, 96, of Chicago, Illinois, died
Wednesday, April 8, 2009, in Lake Zurich, Illinois. Graveside
services for Mrs. Robey were held Saturday, April 11, 2009, at 11:30
a.m. at Campground Cemetery in Martin. Father Joseph Paolozzi
officiated the services.
Mrs. Robey was born April 6, 1913 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
to the late Samuel Palantino and Mary Giglestti Palatino. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Robey was also preceded in death by
her husband, Fred Thomas Robey; a son, Fred Robey; two brothers,
Charles Palatino and James Palatino; and a sister, Mary Squillar.
Mrs. Robey is survived by three sons, James Scarp of
Scottsdale, Arizona, Thomas Robey of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and
Larry Robey of Fox Lake, Illinois; and five grandchildren, Mark and
Joey Scarp, and James, Jennifer, and Timothy Robey.
Cecil Z. Campbell
Cecil Z. Campbell, 83, of Holt, Michigan, died Tuesday, April
7, 2009, in Okemos. He was born June 26, 1925 in Dresden to Briston
and Lucy Campbell. He married Elsie Mae Canafax, February 14, 1955
and she preceded him in death, February 28, 2009.
Surviving are sons, Kenneth W. (Ella) Beaver of Tampa,
Florida, and Daniel L. Campbell of Kansas; grandchildren, Kenneth W.
Beaver, Jr., Matthew H. Beaver, and Kaela Campbell; sister, Irene
Howard of Martin; brothers and sisters-in-law, James Leroy (Sue)
Canafax of Webberville, Ray Eugene (Ann) Canafax of Raleigh, North
Carolina, and Patricia Ann Cannarile of Wixom, Michigan, Cecil H.
Garl of Clio, Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie; and a brother,
Haywood Campbell. Cecil was retired from Adams Outdoor Advertising.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 11,
2009, at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel with interment
following in Deepdale Memorial Gardens.
Charles "Chuck" Gilbert Darden, Jr.
Charles "Chuck" Gilbert Darden, Jr., 46, of Gleason, died
Thursday, April 9, 2009, at his home. Funeral services for Mr.
Darden were held Monday, April 13, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Beech
Springs Baptist Church in Gleason. Burial followed in Beech Springs
Cemetery. Bro. Bob Copeland officiated the services.
Mr. Darden was a member of Beech Springs Baptist Church in
Gleason. He was also a member of Jackson Generals Wheelchair Pro
Basketball Team, winner of the 1992 West Tennessee Toughman Contest,
and #1 shotput in the 1996 Paraolympics. Mr. Darden was born in
Webberville, Michigan to the late Charles Gilbert and Phyllis Marie
Hammond Darden, Sr.
Mr. Darden is survived by his wife, Mrs. April Dawn Madding
Darden of Gleason; three daughters, Tamara Darden (Jessie Biggers,
fiancée) of Dresden, Sasha Darden of Gleason, and Dostianna Darden
of Gleason; a son, "Cha-Chi" Charles Gilbert Darden, III (Natalie
Lynn) of Howell, Michigan; two brothers, Warren (Becky) Darden of
Dresden, and Brian (Dee) Elliott of Martin; and two grandchildren,
Blake Conner Darden and Isabella Marie Darden, of Howell, Michigan.
David Wayne Hines
David Wayne Hines, 45, of McKenzie, died Thursday, April 9,
2009, at his home. Dilday Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.
Mr. Hines was born November 15, 1963, in Union City to the
late Jackie and Jessie Faye (Presson) Hines. He was an employee of
New Generations Furniture Company.
He is survived by a brother, Gary Hines of Gleason.
Edna Capps Tilley
Edna Capps Tilley, 82, of Dresden, died Wednesday, April 8,
2009, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Tilley were held
Friday, April 10, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel
in Dresden. Burial followed in Hopewell Cemetery in Gleason. Dr. Don
McCulley officiated the services.
Mrs. Tilley was a housewife and mother. She was a member of
the Dresden First Baptist Church. Mrs. Tilley was born in Gleason to
the late Charles Hatler and Lucinda Tilley Roney. In addition to her
parents, Mrs. Tilley was also preceded in death by her husbands,
Paul Travis Capps, and Gilbert Tilley.
Mrs. Tilley is survived by a daughter, Rhonda (Steve) Greer
of Petersburg, Tennessee; two sons, Roney (Debbie) Capps of Dresden,
and Coy (Patty) Tilley of Gleason; two sisters, Ruth Jackson of
Dresden, and Luree Grissom of Dresden; a grandchild, Cassi Kaye
(Bryan) Walski of Smyrna; three step-grandchildren, Johnny (Lynn)
Tilley of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, Joey (Tracie) Tilley of Arlington,
Tennessee, and Jessica (Stephen) Johns of Martin; and six
step-great-grandchildren. Elmer C. Casperson
Elmer C. Casperson, died March 10, 2009. A memorial service
for Mr. Casperson will be held April 18th at 11:00 a.m. at First
United Methodist Church in Gleason. Burial was in Hopewell Cemetery.
Bro. Mike Jeffers will officiate the services.
Mr. Casperson was born January 20, 1912, the son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer and Amelia (Jung) Casperson, in New Athens,
Illinois. He began a career with Bituminous Casualty Corp. in 1936
as a Safety Engineer and he retired in 1974. Mr. Casperson moved to
Gleason in 1985 and was a member of the First United Methodist
Church of Gleason. In addition to his parents, Mr. Casperson was
also preceded in death by his wives, Ellen Sterling and Mary Frances
Maddox.
Mr. Casperson is survived by a son, Tom J. Casperson of
Winona, Minnesota; granddaughter, Jenny Kalmes of Burnsville,
Minnesota; grandson, Tom J. Casperson, II of Rosemount, Minnesota;
granddaughter, Amy Casperson of Eagan, Minnesota; and Charles
Casperson of Winona, Minnesota. He is also survived by
great-grandchildren, Matt, Hannah, and Jane Kalmes, Anna, Sarah,
Max, and Emma Casperson, and Ellen Casperson.
Eunie Catherine Watson Swanson
Eunie Catherine Watson Swanson, 91, of Dresden, died
Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union
City. Funeral services for Mrs. Swanson were held Saturday, April
11, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden.
Burial followed in Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Kenneth
Williams officiated the services.
Mrs. Swanson was a housewife and a volunteer for the American
Red Cross and numerous other church and civic organizations in St.
Louis. She was a member of the United Union Methodist Church in St.
Louis, Missouri and the Perigan Society. Mrs. Swanson was born in
Weakley County to the late John Henry and Era Bowlin Watson. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Swanson was also preceded in death by
her husband, Mr. Wayne G. Swanson; four sisters, Mozelle Hogard,
Lottie Hodges, Virginia Williams, and Elzie Meyers; and four
brothers, Sammie Ray Watson, Carl, Bill, and Dan Watson.
Mrs. Swanson is survived by four sisters, Annie Ruth Gingrego
of Wisconsin, Mary Grovo of St. Louis, Missouri, Nellie Jo Rife of
Chicago, Illinois, and Ruby Smith of Martin; and several nieces and
nephews. Harry Daniel Clifton
Harry Daniel Clifton, 79, of Dukedom, died Friday, April 10,
2009, at Western Baptist Hospital. Memorial services for Mr. Clifton
will be held Saturday, April 18, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at Hornbeak
Funeral Chapel in Fulton. Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery in Water
Valley. Rev. James Lawson will officiate the services.
Mr. Clifton served in Korea as a US Navy Corpsman attached to
the 1st Marine Division participating in the liberation of Inchon,
Seoul and in the battle for the Chosin Reservoir. He was discharged
in December 1951. He was an active member in "The Chosen Few," an
organization of Korean War Veterans who had served at the Chosin
Reservoir. After moving to Detroit, he joined the Detroit Police
Department, where he served for 27 1/2 years rising through the
ranks and receiving several awards and citations for bravery. He
retired as Executive Lieutenant in 1981 and became actively engaged
in farming in Tennessee and Kentucky. He was also a member of the
Shriners and the Roberts Lodge #172 in Fulton. Mr. Clifton was born
January 11, 1930, the third son of the late Bennie Alexander Clifton
and Blanch (Brown) Clifton. He grew up in the Beerlerton Community
in Hickman, Kentucky. In addition to his parents, Mr. Clifton was
also preceded in death by two brothers, Aaron Brown Clifton and
Charles Burton Clifton.
Mr. Clifton is survived by his wife of 55 years, Oral Lee
(Yates) Clifton of Dukedom; a son, Christopher Alan Clifton of
Collierville; two grandchildren, Alania Ruth Clifton and Christopher
Alan Clifton, II; and a sister, Ruth Clifton Gill of Centerville.
Joe Baldridge
Joe Baldridge, a retired pharmacist, died April 11, at his
residence in Orlando, Florida. He was 82.
Joe was born and reared in Dresden, the son of the late Mrs.
Irene Baldridge. He was a 1944 graduate of Dresden High School.
He leaves his wife, Emily; one son; one daughter; and four
grandchildren; two sisters, Martha Holland of Raleigh, North
Carolina, and Sue McDonald of Nashville. He was a first cousin of
Mary Cornelia Herron.
He was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a
later date in Orlando. Mary Frances Green
Mary Frances Green, 87, of Sharon, died Tuesday, April 7,
2009, at Weakley County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in
Dresden. Funeral services for Mrs. Green were held Friday, April 10,
2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Corinth Baptist Church. Burial followed in
Brock's Cemetery. Bro. Gerry Gallimore and Bro. Thurman Penick
officiated the services.
Mrs. Green was a homemaker. She was born November 8, 1921 in
Weakley County. Mrs. Green was preceded in death by a son, James
Thomas Green; and a brother, John Robert Wilson.
Mrs. Green is survived by her husband, Virgil Green of
Sharon; a son, Robert (Sherry Anne) Green of Greenfield; six
grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Patrick Dean McAlister
Patrick Dean McAlister, 31, of Dresden, died Wednesday, April
8, 2009, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. Funeral
services for Mr. McAlister were held Saturday, April 11, 2009, at
2:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed
in Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Terry Griffin officiated the
services.
Mr. McAlister was a laborer for Best Drainage Systems and a
Baptist by faith. He was born in Dyersburg to Rickey Dean and
Carolyn May Ivy McAlister.
Mr. McAlister is survived by two sons, Aaron and Jerron
McAlister of Palmersville; two sisters, Sherry Payne of Martin, and
Christy Blassingame of Dresden; and brother, Rickey L. McAlister of
Martin. Velva L. Hawks, Sr.
Velva L. Hawks, Sr., 90, of Mayfield, Kentucky, died
Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Jackson Purchase Medical Center.
Funeral services for Mr. Hawks will be held today, Wednesday, April
15, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Byrn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will
follow in Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Tony Steele will
officiate the services.
Mr. Hawks was a retired farmer and a member of the Sharon
Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry
Almary and Gertrue (Todd) Hawks; a son, Velva Hawks, Jr.; a brother,
Glaston Hawks; a sister, Ruvadell Cashion; and a step-grandson,
Randy Pinkston.
Mr. Hawks is survived by his wife of seventy years, Juanita
McClain Hawks of Mayfield; a daughter, Janice Hawks Mathis of
Mayfield; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; fourteen
step-grandchildren; twenty-two step-great-grandchildren; and
thirty-six step-great-great-grandchildren.
Virginia Estelle Pitts
Virginia Estelle Pitts, 91, of Dyersburg, died Thursday,
April 9, 2009, at Dyersburg Manor. Graveside services for Mrs. Pitts
were held Saturday, April 11, 2009, at 4:30 p.m. at Woodlawn
Cemetery. Tony Harrison officiated the services.
Mrs. Pitts was a homemaker. She was born August 6, 1917 in
Kinston, North Carolina. Mrs. Pitts was preceded in death by her
husband, Howard Thomas "Red" Pitts; and a sister, Margaret Louise
Speight.
Mrs. Pitts is survived by two nephews, Timothy P. Campbell of
Dyersburg, and Charles Preston Pitts of Portland, Oregon; and seven
nieces, Tracey Armstrong of Union City, Cynthia Ferrell of
Shelbyville, Sue Freeman of Scottsboro, Alabama, Glenda Hunter of
Valrico, Florida, Barbara Masters of Gallatin, Tennessee, Patsy
Morris of Montgomery, Alabama, and Carla Robbins of Collierville,
Tennessee.
