Everett-Stewart Regional Airport extension project to be finalized soon

By David Fisher

Staff Reporter

With the signing of a deed finalizing the purchase of land needed for the extension of the runway at Everett-Stewart Regional Airport days away, members of the airport board are looking forward to work getting underway. The project includes $4.3 million runway project, and a $4.1 million access road extension, for a total of $8.4 million, which will be mostly funded through grants, and the local matching funds paid by Obion and Weakley counties.

During a Thursday, February 19 meeting of the airport board, members heard from Dr. Chris Gooch, chairman of the Everett-Stewart Regional Airport Commission, concerning the wording of the deed in order for the land purchase to be finalized. Dr. Gooch also stated the environmental assessment, feasibility study, for the airport extension project has been completed.

Randy Hudgings, project engineer for the Barge-Waggoner, Sumner, Cannon engineering firm in Germantown, Tennessee, attended the meeting to give the board an update on the various ongoing projects.

Airport Design Bid

Dr. Gooch stated the design and bidding phase for the runway extension has not yet been awarded, because the airport board will not have the land needed for the project until the deed is finalized.

Dr. Gooch stated that he and Speer met with attorney Steve Connelly about the deed on Thursday, February 19, and Connelly stated, hopefully, a formal deed would be signed next week.

Dr. Gooch said the deed would have to be reviewed by the state, and a copy would also be sent to landowner Gail Latimer’s attorney, Charles Barnett. He added the Obion County Agricultural Committee would be notified of the situation once the deed is finalized, because they will be in charge of leasing the land.

Dr. Gooch stated the deed stipulates Mrs. Latimer will receive the money from the leasing of the tillable land on the 65 acres she is selling to the airport board as long as she lives. “This has nothing to do with the buildings,” Dr. Gooch said. “If we sell a building, (the money) is ours.

“We have the local match appropriated, and I’m satisfied to go ahead and sign the bid on the designing bid on the runway extension, if they will hold it until we get the deed in hand.” He stated the final deed should be approved at all levels within the next 60 days.

However, board members decided to wait on signing the bid until they had time to review it. In order to facilitate matters, the board agreed to let Dr. Gooch know their decision by March 5, so he could go ahead and sign the contract if that is the board’s desire. He noted the state has already agreed to provide $340,000 for the design and bidding of the runway extension project.

Dr. Gooch outlined the order in which the actions concerning the improvements at the airport would have to take place, saying, “It will be done in stages. You have to extend the runway first. Then, you will have to move the glide-slope antenna. You’ll have to move some electrical lines down on the road. The silo, the house and the barn, are going to have to go because habitable structures are not allowed within the glide-slope plane. The next phase will be the taxiway extension. That can be done in another year and another time.”

Commissioner Westbrook stated that some stimulus money could become available for the airport projects.

Kentucky woman sought on shoplifting charge

Police are searching for a 47-year-old Kentucky woman for allegedly shoplifting and then damaging another vehicle as she fled the scene.

Martin police are searching for Angela D. Ware of 407 Wells Avenue, Fulton, Kentucky on charges of shoplifting and fleeing the scene of an accident.

A Martin police report states that at approximately 3:05 p.m. Friday, February 20, Ptl. Bradley R. Cook responded to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter that had just left the premises. Store personnel Hillary Funderbunk and Chad Richards told Ptl. Cook they stopped an unknown black female in the parking lot. The witnesses told the officer that, upon being confronted, the black female attempted to get away from security, and during the struggle, left behind the merchandise valued at $106.64, along with her jacket and purse, and ran out of her shoes.

The suspect then got into a white, Mazda Protégé and struck an adjacent vehicle while trying to drive away from the scene.

Ptl. Cook states the underside of the rear fender well was damaged.

Immediate attempts to locate the suspect’s vehicle were unsuccessful. However, at approximately 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 21, Ptl. Cook viewed a video of the incident, and shortly afterward contacted the owner of the vehicle, Ruby J. Burton of Fulton, Kentucky. Burton told police that around noon on the day of the incident, a black female by the name of Angela Ware asked if she could borrow her vehicle, and she allowed her to do so.

Dresden home destroyed in Sunday morning blaze; family escapes

By David Fisher

Staff Reporter

The home of a Dresden businessman and his family was destroyed in a fire early Sunday morning.

According to Dresden Fire Chief Paul Hutcherson, approximately 12:22 a.m., the Dresden Fire Department received a fire call at 190 Twin Lakes Drive, which is the home of Robert “Bob” Daniel, owner of Bob’s Pharmacy in Dresden.

Chief Hutcherson states Dresden firefighters arrived at the scene at 12:30 a.m. with two engines and at that time, the blaze was fully involved with flames and heavy smoke pouring out of the side of the two-story brick home. Because of the need for more water to fight the fire, Dresden F.D. requested mutual aid from Martin and Palmersville fire departments, while Gleason Fire Department was asked to stand by the station for coverage if needed.

“The interior of the home was too unstable for an interior attack,” Chief Hutcherson said.

The fire was knocked down and under control at 2:30 a.m., however, firefighters remained on the scene until all of the flames were extinguished at 6:20 a.m.

Approximately 50,000 gallons of water was used in extinguishing the blaze.

Chief Hutcherson states the family was asleep in bed when the fire erupted, but thanks to a smoke detector, everyone was alerted to the fire in time to evacuate the home without injury. He said new batteries were installed in the smoke detector just a few days ago, which probably saved their lives. Hutcherson added the children’s room was near to where the fire started and, if not for the smoke detector, the story could have had a much more tragic ending.

Martin man sought on aggravated assault charge

The Martin Police Department is seeking a 22-year-old Martin man on an aggravated assault charge.

Police are searching for William Broc Davis of 123 Elm Street. Apt. A, for a allegedly assaulting a Martin woman and threatening her with a weapon.

At 6:15 p.m. on February 19, Ptl Timothy S. Dolack was dispatched to 123 Elm Street. Apt. A. to investigate a reported domestic assault.

When Ptl. Dolack spoke with the alleged victim, 21-year-old Amber Staggs, the woman stated she and her boyfriend, William Davis, had gotten into a verbal dispute over her car payment while watching a movie. Staggs told the officer that during the argument, Dolack decided to leave and asked her for his cell phone. But Staggs stated when she told him she did not know where the cell phone was located, Dolack grabbed a trash bag containing her personal items and was going to throw them outside the apartment. Staggs said when she grabbed the bag in an attempt to stop Dolack, he pushed her, causing her to hit her head and mouth on the bathroom door.

Staggs stated Dolack then went upstairs and came back down with a silver handgun. He allegedly pointed the weapon at Staggs, and told her that if she didn’t give him his cell phone, he was going to shoot her. The victim then reached under the sofa and gave Dolack his cell phone. Staggs stated Dolack then left the residence and she called the police.
