By Jason Peevyhouse

The Martin Middle School Panthers and Lady Panthers got their season off to a good start, but at the expense of Dresden Middle School as the two blue and white teams swept the Lady Lions and Lions on Monday night in middle school basketball action.
In girls action, Dresden was able to keep it close during the first quarter, but was outscored 37-16 over the final three quarters in their 51-23 loss to the Lady Panthers. In the nightcap, the Panthers dominated Dresden 54-24.

A 16-8 second quarter for the Lady Panthers set the tone for the rest of the game as Martin Middle cruised to a victory in its season opener.
Leading 14-7 going into the second stanza, the Lady Panthers got free throws from Sam Daily, Kaley Leyhue and Ashley Smith to push their lead to 10 points. After a Dresden free throw from Kailey Martin, the Lady Panthers went on a 6-0 run to push their lead to 23-8. But, Dresden would rally with a 7-3 run of its own before a pair of late free throws from MMS’ Katelyn Harrelson and a Leyhue jumper made the halftime score 30-15.
The Lady Panthers continued to dominate the game, opening the second half with a 7-2 run to push their lead to 20 points. Martin Middle then closed the third frame with an 8-2 run capped by a pair of Daily free throws to make the score 45-21 at the end of the third stanza.
The Lady Panthers opened the final frame with a 6-0 run before a late Carrie Hatchel jumper cut the deficit back to under 30 at the final whistle.

Playoff participants from 7-1A still up in the air in Week 10

By Jason Peevyhouse

Going into the final week of the 2008 TSSAA football season, there is still a lot to be decided in Region 7-1A as five of the eight teams are vying for the remaining three playoff berths in the region.
Union City, undefeated in regional play, has already clinched the Region 7-1A title and will be home on the first Friday in November in the first round of the TSSAA Class A State Playoffs.
However, Gleason, Greenfield, McKenzie, Lake County and South Fulton will have to play for their playoff seed on Friday night.
In each of the eight playoff scenarios posted on the TSSAA Web Site, McKenzie is at least going to finish no lower than fourth place in the region. However, for the other four teams, their plans for Week 11 are still uncertain.
According to the scenarios on tssaa.org:
* If Gleason loses, South Fulton loses, and Lake County wins, Lake County is second, McKenzie is third, and Gleason is fourth.
* If Gleason wins, South Fulton loses, and Lake County wins, McKenzie is second, Gleason is third, and Lake County is fourth.
* If Gleason loses, South Fulton wins, and Lake County wins, Lake County is second, South Fulton is third, and McKenzie is fourth.
* If Gleason wins, South Fulton wins, and Lake County wins, Gleason is second, Lake County is third, and South Fulton is fourth.
* If Gleason loses, South Fulton loses, and Lake County loses, McKenzie is second, Greenfield is third, and Gleason is fourth.
* If Gleason wins, South Fulton loses, and Lake County loses, McKenzie is second, Gleason is third, and Greenfield is fourth.
* If Gleason loses, South Fulton wins, and Lake County loses, South Fulton is second, McKenzie is third, and Greenfield is fourth.
* If Gleason wins, South Fulton wins, and Lake County loses, Gleason is second, South Fulton is third, and McKenzie is fourth.
Basically, for local fans, these scenarios say that, if Gleason wins they’re in the playoffs, even possibly finishing as high as second depending on other results. The Bulldogs can lose, but, if that happens, Gleason will need a little help getting in.
For Greenfield, Thursday night’s game at Lake County is a must-win if the Yellowjackets are to have any hope of making the playoffs.

Gleason runs past SFHS Red Devils for 36-6 regional victory

The Gleason Bulldogs got one step closer to punching their playoff ticket as the Dawgs traveled to South Fulton and came back with a 36-6 regional victory on Friday night.
The Bulldogs wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. After a 52-yard kickoff return by Zach Wallace on the opening kick, a three-yard run by Alex Verdell set up a 26-yard scamper by Shadow Roney for a score. The two-point attempt failed, but Gleason held a 6-0 lead just 54 seconds into the contest.
The Bulldogs’ second drive of the night stalled, but Gleason’s offense was not slowed for long. After forcing a South Fulton punt, the Dawgs went back to work on offense, opening the drive with a seven-yard run by Wallace and a three-yard gain by Verdell, but the runs were sandwiched by a pair of five-yard penalties. However, Gleason picked up a first down with an 11-yard pass from Nicky Spain to Ben Sumner that took the Bulldogs across midfield to the South Fulton 42-yard line. Three plays later, Roney picked up another first down with an eight-yard gain to the Red Devil 30-yard line. After another penalty, a pair of Wallace runs took the Bulldogs into the red zone. Wallace would get another fresh set of downs three plays later before scoring on a six-yard run. Spain added the two-point conversion to make the score 14-0 with 9:58 left in the first half.
Gleason’s defense forced another three-and-out and the offense once again took the field with good field position near midfield. Wallace opened the ensuing drive with a 16-yard run to the Red Devil 36-yard line. Two plays later, Verdell picked up another first down to set up a 20-yard touchdown run by Wallace. The two-point attempt failed, leaving the score at 20-0 in Gleason’s favor with 6:05 left in the second stanza.
Gleason was able to put together another good drive late in the first half, but penalties ended that drive in the red zone.
