Gibson County spoils DHS homecoming with 47-0 loss |
|

What began as a close contest through the opening quarter on
Friday night at Rotary Field quickly turned into a one-sided
affair during the final three quarters as Gibson County
scored 40 points over the final 36 minutes to take a 47-0
win and spoil the Lions homecoming.
Dresden was able to put together a short drive on its first
possession, getting three straight runs from Zach Garner to
get the Lions going. But, a third-down penalty slowed the
Lions’ progress and halted the drive at the Dresden 41-yard
line, forcing them to punt.
The Lions were able to hold the Pioneers in check on their
next drive, allowing only one first down before forcing a
punt. But, Gibson County returned the favor to the Lions,
forcing a three-and-out.
On the first play of the next Gibson County drive, Pioneer
running back Joseph Sherley broke free down the sideline for
an 8-0yard touchdown run. Cody Carpenter added the extra
point to make the score 7-0 with 1:58 left in the first
frame.
After the Pioneer defense stifled the Dresden offensive
attack, it took only two plays for the Gibson County offense
to find the end zone. A seven-yard run by Chase Arnold was
followed by a 15-yard face masking penalty. That penalty set
up a 14-yard touchdown run by Sherrod Johnson to put the
Pioneers on the board again. The PAT failed, leaving the
Pioneers ahead 13-0 with 9:48 remaining the first half.
Dresden seemed to be ready to gain some momentum later in the
half, as a Gibson County fumble found its way into the hands
of a Dresden defender. But, two plays later, an interception
ended the Lion possession at the Gibson County 20-yard line.

Special to the Enterprise |
McKenzie High School's Rebels (6-1, 3-1) were warmly
welcomed home after a three-game road stretch Friday night.
The Yellowjackets of Greenfield (3-4, 2-2) visited as a
well-prepared Rebel squad played relentlessly on both sides
of the ball, led by quarterback Austin McKinney's 11 of 16,
248 yard, 2 touchdown performance. Sophomore receiver /
defensive back Richie Clark was also a standout returning an
early interception 47 yards for a score, as well as making
four receptions for 90 yards and a touchdown.
McKenzie deferred possession until the second half after
winning the opening coin-toss. Rebel kicker Harris Laughrey
kicked off to Greenfield's Zack Harris, whose nice return
was brought back to the McKenzie 20-yard line after a block
in the back penalty. Quarterback Ty Smithson's first down
pass fell incomplete and Rebel Zack English shot through the
line to sack Smithson for a six-yard loss. Smithson
scrambled for a ten yard gain before the Yellowjackets
punted following a three and out series.
McKenzie took over at the Greenfield 47 with at the 10:22
mark. Fullback Jacob Fussell began the drive with a
four-yard rush. Junior running back Quinton Bowden added a
two-yard carry. Richie Clark grabbed a McKinney bullet for
eleven yards and a first down. McKinney fired incomplete and
the Rebels were flagged for holding before senior lineman
Tyler Watson alertly recovered a second down fumble. Third
and 18 turned to third and 23 following an illegal procedure
penalty. McKinney completed a pass to John Johnson for seven
yards and the Rebels punted for a touchback.
Yellowjacket back Tyler Dunning rushed twice for gains of one
and two yards, respectively to start the next Greenfield
drive. Smithson completed a 15-yard pass to Daniel Ricketts
for a first down at the Greenfield 39. Smithson dropped back
again and released a pass deftly intercepted by McKenzie's
Clark and returned 47 yards for the first score of the game
with 5:02 remaining in the first quarter. Laughrey's PAT
kick was good and the Rebels lead 7-0.
Beginning from their own 16 yard-line, the Yellowjackets
Smithson rushed for a yard. Dunning carried for three yards
and Smithson threw an incompletion as Steven Johnson punted
the ball away following the three and out.
