Humboldt dominates Dresden to eliminate Lions

By Jason Peevyhouse

Sports Editor

A four-run first inning set the tone for the Vikings, who also put up a four-spot in the fifth on their way to an 11-2 win over Dresden in the consolation bracket of the District 14-A baseball tournament at Union City.

A one-out single from Brian Wilhawks led to an RBI triple by Chris Brasfield to the Vikings out in front. A Clint Brown groundout pushed Brasfield across the plate. A two-run double by Ty Forren later in the inning made the score 4-0 at the end of one inning.

Humboldt plated another run in the second inning when Brasfield got an RBI single to put the Vikings ahead by five runs.

Humboldt extended its lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Wilhawks reached on an error to score a run.

The Lions finally cut into the Viking lead in the fifth when a Daniel Harris two-out triple ignited a mini-rally. Greg Alderdice then reached on an error to score Harris and trim the lead to 6-1.

But, the Vikings came back stronger in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on four hits and four walks to take a 10-1 lead before Justin Hatler came in in relief and struck out three of the five batters he faced.

By Jason Peevyhouse

Though the Bulldog defense was able to keep the Tiger offense in check for most of the afternoon, their own offense was unable to overcome Halls, falling to the Tigers 4-2 in the consolation bracket of the District 14-A baseball tournament on Monday afternoon in Union City.
Halls got on the board early as Craig Davis flew out to right field to score Jacob Clark, who had doubled before him, to make the score 1-0 after the top of the first inning.
Gleason threatened in the bottom of the frame, getting runners on first and second with one out after a walk and a hit batsman. But, Halls' Michael Coley was able to get the final two outs to end the threat.
Halls got on the board again in the top of the third when Craig Davis got an RBI single to expand the lead to 2-0.
The Tigers pushed their lead to 4-0 in the top of the sixth inning when Cody Dew knocked a two-run single to push the lead to four runs.

Dresden avenges losses to Greenfield with tourney win

By Jason Peevyhouse

Sports Editor

During the regular season, the Greenfield Yellowjackets handed the Dresden Lions two costly district losses. However, those losses were avenged on Saturday afternoon, as the Lions eliminated the 'Jackets with a 10-6 win in the District 14-A Tournament at Union City.
Dresden got on the board early as Greg Alderdice scored on an error. After reaching on a single, Justin Hatler scored when Matt Beaty reached on an error to make the score 2-0 after the top of the first inning.
The Lions added to their lead in the top of the third inning as a one-out triple by Hatler was followed by a straight-away centerfield blast. Later in the inning, starting pitcher Roe Hughes helped his own cause with a one-run single to put the Lions ahead 5-0.
A double and three singles to lead off the top of the fourth inning led to two more runs for the Lions. Hughes added another RBI single later in the inning to give the Lions an 8-0 lead.
Greenfield finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. An RBI groundout by Daniel Ricketts and a one-run single from Steven Johnson cut the Dresden lead to 8-2 at the end of four innings.
