A four-run first inning set the tone for
the Vikings, who also put up a four-spot in the fifth on
their way to an 11-2 win over Dresden in the consolation
bracket of the District 14-A baseball tournament at Union
City.
A one-out single from Brian Wilhawks led to an RBI triple by
Chris Brasfield to the Vikings out in front. A Clint Brown
groundout pushed Brasfield across the plate. A two-run
double by Ty Forren later in the inning made the score 4-0
at the end of one inning.
Humboldt plated another run in the second inning when
Brasfield got an RBI single to put the Vikings ahead by five
runs.
Humboldt extended its lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the
fourth when Wilhawks reached on an error to score a run.
The Lions finally cut into the Viking lead in the fifth when
a Daniel Harris two-out triple ignited a mini-rally. Greg
Alderdice then reached on an error to score Harris and trim
the lead to 6-1.
But, the Vikings came back stronger in the bottom of the
fifth, scoring four runs on four hits and four walks to take
a 10-1 lead before Justin Hatler came in in relief and
struck out three of the five batters he faced.
