Skyhawk golf one stroke off lead at Grove Page Classic

Battling through a day full of weather delays at the Grover Page Classic, the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team fired a 3-over-par 291 and finds itself only one stroke off the lead after the first round. The Skyhawks were led by the tandem of Cole Floyd and John Slayton, who both carded even-par 72s on the day and are tied for seventh in the individual competition.
Named for legendary UT Martin golf coach Grover Page, the Grover Page Classic is a 36-hole stroke play tournament conducted by the University of Tennessee at Martin and hosted at Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn. The 90-player field is made up of 16 teams, including six from Tennessee, and 10 participants competing as individuals. The par-72 Jackson Country Club course plays at 6,783 yards.
Page, who became the program's first coach in 1967, guided the program to eight appearances in the NCAA Championships and coached seven different student-athletes to 11 selections to the All-American Team.
With an eye to the radar, the Grover Page Classic tournament committee moved first round action up an hour to 7:30 a.m. in efforts to avoid as much of the inclement weather as possible. After about four holes had been completed the first weather delay came and lasted 27 minutes. Play resumed, but before all groups could complete their first nine holes, the second weather delay set in. This time play was halted for over an hour and a half. When play resumed for the second time the first round was completed and play immediately began in the second round. Three holes were completed in second round action before the third and final line of rain showers passed through, ending play for the day.

Ambidextrous pitchers help Creighton complete sweep over UTM

For six innings the UT Martin baseball team gave perennial power Creighton all it could handle. However, the visiting Bluejays scored two runs in the eighth inning and two more runs in the ninth inning to complete a three-game sweep over the host Skyhawks with an 8-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.
"We played with some energy," said Bubba Cates, the Skyhawks head coach. "We are growing up as a team and trying to find our identity."
With the loss the Skyhawks fall to 0-8 on the season, while Creighton, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference improves to 4-2.
The Skyhawks will return to action Tuesday, March 4, when they host Evansville, another Missouri Valley Conference team. Action gets under way at 2 p.m. at Skyhawk Field.
Creighton scored one run in second inning and one run in the third inning. The Skyhawks answered back with one run in the bottom of the second and one run in the bottom of the third.

Equestrian falls short in overall match

Despite a big win in the hunter seat category, UT Martin's equestrian team lost its overall match against Stephen F. Austin Friday in Nacogdoches, Texas. The Skyhawks fell short of the Lady Jacks by six points, losing 11-5. The hunt seat team defeated the Lady Jacks 5-3, but the western squad failed to score a point in its 8-0 loss to Stephen F. Austin.
"On the hunter seat side, the ladies rode well. We had very strong rides over fences. A few minor mistakes prevented us from outright winning on the flat. The win came down to Michelle Thompson's ride and she was stellar for the team today," said second-year head coach Meghan Cunningham Corvin. "Unfortunately, the western riders had some mental mistakes that prevented them from scoring today."
A sophomore from Winter Haven, Fla., Michelle Thompson won her head-to-head matches in both the over fences and on the flat categories. Over fences, Thompson beat her opponent by nine points. Mary Fly and Audrey Hanlon also had wins in over fences for the Skyhawks, to defeat Stephen F. Austin in the discipline, 3-1. UT Martin tied the Lady Jacks on the flat, 2-2, with wins coming from Thompson and Fly.
In western, UT Martin was shutout in both the reining and horsemanship categories.
It was the first win for the Lady Jacks this season, who improved their record to 1-6 with their victory over UT Martin. The Skyhawks, who face Baylor University in an 11 a.m. match Saturday, in Waco, Texas, drop to 2-5 on the season.
