Screaming Eagle signs with UTM cross country |
Lucas Massey, a member of the Army's 160th Special
Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), has signed a
National Letter of Intent to join the UT Martin Skyhawks
cross country team this fall.
While Massey has spent the last three years accumulating tens
of thousands of miles of travel because of many rotations of
duty between Fort Campbell, Ky and Iraq, he has also logged
thousands miles of running to garner the competitive times
of 56:28 for 10 miles and 15:38 for 5000 meters.
"My aerobic fitness would go up and down with the
intermittent duty to Iraq, but I still managed some good
times as the months passed by," Massey said.
Massey is a graduate of Tenino High School in state of
Washington. While there he accumulated four years of cross
country and track experience before joining the Army. In
joining the special night operations regiment with his
ammunitions training he also underwent unique training such
as the military's Airborne school, Survival/
Evacuation/Resistance/Escape school and Combat assessments.

Women's basketball adds four to roster |
|
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball
team has added four talented new additions to the 2008
arsenal. A pair of experienced junior college transfers,
Hailey Purcell from Hutchinson Community College and Sienna
Forney from Walters State Community College, will bring
experience to the line up. Also joining the Skyhawks is a
pair of high school standouts from Detroit Renaissance High
School, Kiara Smith and Samantha Harper.
"These four young ladies will be very welcomed additions to
our team," said UT Martin head coach Tara Tansil. "They
bring a great combination of youth and experience and we
will be looking to all four of them for contributions from
the first day of practice."
Originally from Hamilton, New Zealand, Purcell was part of a
very successful Hutchinson Community College team that went
24-8 last season and advanced to the second round of the
NJCAA Region VI second round. In two seasons with Hutchinson
CC, Purcell averaged 5.3 points-per-game and 5.4 rebounds
from her guard position. She also averaged 35 assists per
season. During her sophomore campaign last year, Purcell
often drew defenders much taller than her 5-10 frame but she
was still third on the team with 194 rebounds on the year.
She had eight games where she had eight rebounds or more.
Purcell's performance on the boards helped the Hutchinson
squad out rebound 21-of-30 opponents on the year, along with
also climbing into the national top-25 standings.
