Greenfield rallies past Lions in district basketball action

By Jason Peevyhouse

Though both teams had only played a combined two games since December 23, the Greenfield Yellowjackets and Dresden Lions gave local basketball fans a good start to the second half of high school basketball in Weakley County on Friday night at Dresden High School.

Despite trailing by 10 at the half, the 'Jackets outscored Dresden 35-19 in the second half to take a 57-51 win over the Lions.

Earlier that night, the Lady Lions took a 58-31 win over Greenfield in girls action.

The 'Jackets outscored Dresden by 16 in the final two frames to turn a 10-point deficit into a six-point lead by the final horn.

Leading by six points at the end of the first frame, the Lions added to that lead early in the second frame with jumpers from Tyson Wright and Justin Hatler.  After a pair of free throws later in the frame by Hatler put Dresden ahead by 10, the Lions and 'Jackets swapped points through the remainder of the frame to make the score 32-22 at the end of the first half.

But, the 'Jackets came out with fire in the second half as a pair of layups from Shane cut the Dresden lead down to four points with 5:51 left in the third frame.  But, supported by four points from Tylson Wright, the Lions were able to build their lead back to eight points.  The 'Jackets were not done, though, as a jumper from Derek Laster sparked a late-quarter 10-1 run that was capped by a three-point play by Laster to give Greenfield a one-point lead.  But, a later Wright jumper gave Dresden a 43-42 lead at the end of the frame.

By Jason Peevyhouse

The Chargers and Lady Chargers completed their journey through the brackets of the 43rd annual Lions Club Christmas Tournament, taking both the boys and girls titles on Saturday, December 29 at Westview High School.

In boys' action, the Chargers took a 68-61 victory over the Ripley Tigers while the Lady Chargers took a 66-42 win over Sycamore.

Despite a slow start in the championship game, the Chargers rallied in the second frame to take the lead that they would not give up and take the boys championship.

Trailing by seven after the first frame, the Chargers saw the gap spread to nine points early in the second frame as jumpers from Dontavious Alston and Eric Debarry put the Tigers ahead 19-10 with just over seven minutes left in the second frame. But, a jumper from Jacob Lloyd and a three-pointer from Tournament MVP Marcus Easley, as well as a free throw from Travis Hayslett cut the lead down to three points.  After a Niko Alston jumper answered those tallies, a Lloyd trey sparked a 9-0 run that gave Westview its first lead since early in the opening frame.  Ripley would tie the score later in the second stanza but a pair of late Davell Lloyd freebies gave the Chargers a 27-25 lead at the break.

Women's basketball drops tenth straight

The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team held a lead for a large portion of the night, but Tennessee State was able to mount a comeback and hand the Skyhawks their tenth consecutive loss of the season.  Crystal Fuller nearly matched her career high with 23 points and Phyllisha Mithcell chipped in 12, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Lady Tigers.

With the loss, UT Martin falls to 3-12 on the year and 0-5 in Ohio Valley Conference play.  The 10 consecutive losses also matched the second longest losing streak in team history.

The longest streak was 12 games, set during the Skyhawks inaugural year in the OVC, which was 1992-93.

In the first half, the Skyhawks had the hot hand and were able to jump out to an early lead.  Fuller nailed the first shot of the game on a fade away jumper from the right side.  Over the next two minutes she recorded another bucket in addition to leading on the defensive side, picking up a charged on TSU leading scorer Oby Okafor.
