Westview sweeps through Thanksgiving Classic

    The Westview Chargers and Lady Chargers each took their mark to 2-0 in the annual Westview Thanksgiving Classic, winning on Saturday night at Westview High School. In other action, the Dresden Lady Lions and Greenfield’s Lady ’Jackets and Yellowjackets fell in holiday action.

    Greenfield rallied to cut the Lady Patriot lead down to two points at the end of the third frame and even took the lead early in the fourth stanza, but a late run by the Lady Patriots gave Henry County a 56-49 win.
    The Lady Patriots took a seven-point lead late in the third frame, but a pair of free throws from Katie McCall capped a late 5-0 run to make the Henry County lead 41-39 at the end of three frames.
    Jordan Galey tied the game early in the final frame with a pair of free throws. A pair of Lady Patriot free throws gave the lead back to Henry County, three-pointers from Mallory Robinson and Katie McCall put Greenfield ahead 47-43 with 6:29 left in the game. A pair of McCall free throws countered a Tianna Porter jumper to maintain the Greenfield lead. But, a Porter jumper sparked a game-ending 11-0 run to give the Lady Patriots the seven-point win.

    Dyersburg jumped out to an early lead, but the Yellowjackets made sure the Trojans would have to fight for a win, as a second quarter run kept the game close throughout the remaining three frames.
    Dyersburg took a 10-point lead late in the second frame, but Greenfield responded with an 8-0 run to cut the lead down to 28-24 at the half.
    Greenfield cut the lead to two points early in the second half, but Dyersburg was able to build the Trojan lead back to 33-28 at the end of the third frame.
    Free throws from Daniel Ricketts and Wes Clark cut the lead down to a single point early in the final frame. But, Dyersburg came back with a 6-0 run to build its lead back. A jumper from Steven Johnson and a free throw from Daniel Ricketts cut the lead back to a point. But, Dyersburg outscored the Yellowjackets 4-2 down the stretch to take the win.
    Clark led the way for Greenfield with 15 points.

    Dresden led after three quarters, but Dyersburg rallied in the final frame to force overtime before taking the six-point win in the extra stanza.
    A Lady Trojan 5-2 run early in the final frame tied the game early in the final frame. Led by Erica Glisson, the Lady Lions retook the lead and maintained it through the frame. But, with just four seconds left in regulation Jessica Light got the inbounds pass and raced down the court, throwing up and hitting a desperation three-pointer to tie the game and force overtime.
    In the extra frame the Lady Trojans jumped out with three treys (two from Lauren Davis) to build a lead they would not relinquish, taking the overtime win.
Glisson led everyone with 42 points in the loss for the Lady Lions.

Chargers, Lady Chargers win in Classic opener; Greenfield teams fall

    Five of the county’s local teams saw action in the annual Westview High School Thanksgiving Classic over the weekend. The Dresden Lady Lions and both Westview teams each picked up wins on Friday, while Greenfield fell in both boys and girls action.

    The Lady Chargers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, taking their opening game in the Thanksgiving Classic.
    Led by Amber Rechis, who scored 16 points in the opening quarter, the Lady Chargers jumped out to a 32-4 lead at the end of the first frame.
    The Lady Chargers outscored Halls 9-2 during the rest of the second half to take a 41-6 lead at the break.
Westview sealed the win with an 18-11 second half performance.
    Rechis scored 18 to lead the Lady Chargers.

    Despite having their lead cut to six points in the third quarter, the Westview Chargers ended the frame on a strong note to lead to their 22-point win.
    The Tigers cut the Westrview lead to six points early in the second half and were able to match the Chargers point-for-point through much of the third frame. A three-pointer from Reid Cates sparked a 13-2 run to end the third frame and give the Chargers a 49-32 lead.
    A three-pointer by Jacob Lloyd pushed the Westview lead to 21-points midway through the final frame. The Chargers then cruised to the 22-point victory.
    Jacob Lloyd led four players in double digits with 21 points. Davell Lloyd added 14 while Dillon Gardner tossed in 12. Cates scored 11 in the win.

Baseball team signs pitcher with plenty of connections

   The Gleason Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs each suffered their first losses of the season on Saturday at the Hall of Champions Tournament at West Carroll High School. The Gleason girls fell to a late Camden surge, dropping a 51-50 heartbreaker while the boys dropped a 62-48 decision to the Lions.

    The Lady Bulldogs saw their halftime lead evaporate quickly in the second half, but were able to take a lead late into the final frame before Camden got four late points to take the win.
    Gleason’s seven-point lead at the break shrank quickly in the second half as a layup from Keara White cut the lead to 30-27. Gleason responded with buckets from Kim Edenfield, Sara Hensley and Taylor Stout to build the Lady Bulldog lead back to seven points. But, a 7-0 Lady Lion run tied the game late in the frame. A Taylor Stout jumper with four seconds left in the frame gave Gleason a 38-36 lead at the end of three quarters.
    Camden got a 9-2 run to open the final frame and took a four-point lead midway through the quarter. But, a pair of Edenfield three-pointers put the Lady Bulldogs back on top with 3:45 left in the game. Camden retook the lead with a White jumper, but Edenfield responded with a pair of free throws followed by a Stout jumper. But, the Lady Lions got a pair of free throws from Amanda Brandenberg and a jumper from Heather Capps to retake the lead late in the final frame. The Lady Bulldogs held for the final shot, but were unable to convert their final attempt.
    Kenna Frazier led the way for Gleason with 15 points while Edenfield added 13.
    Brandenberg led the way for Camden with 23 points while Capps scored 10.
