Sixteen years after stepping down as head
coach of the Dresden Lions football program, Scott Hewett
will return to that role in the 2008 season.
“Coach Hewett brings a great amount of knowledge and
experience and will help make for a smooth transition
because of his recent involvement with the program,” DHS
principal Chuck West said.
Hewett will replace Eric Knott, who resigned after one season
with the Dresden Lions.
Hewett first came to Dresden High School in 1981 and served
as the team’s head coach until stepping down after the 1992
season.
During Coach Hewett’s first tenure as head coach, the Dresden
Lions reached the state quarterfinals in Class 1A, finishing
the 1986 season with a record of 9-4.
In his final season, Hewett led the Lions to a 10-2 record.
Hewett takes command of a team coming off a 1-9 season. The
2008 season will have some challenges ahead, as the Lions
will have only four seniors returning to the team from the
2007 season.

Dresden softball falls after four-run seventh |

A seventh inning offensive surge by the Lady Pioneers proved
to be enough to put Gibson County past the Dresden Lady
Lions on Monday afternoon as the Dresden girls fell to their
visitors 4-0 at home.
A leadoff single in the top of the seventh inning was erased
by a fielder’s choice. Gibson County’s pinch runner Partlow
tried to score on a single, but was gunned down on a throw
from Kathryn VanDyke to Megan McWherter to catcher Hannah
Wade to end that scoring threat. But, a two-run double from
Garner plated broke the scoreless tie. Then a two-run
homerun to right field by Davis gave Gibson County a 4-0
lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
A pair of popouts opened the inning before a Breanna Arnold
single kept the inning alive. But, Todd was able to induce a
lineout to end the game and seal the win for the Lady
Pioneers.

Dresden round-trippers hold of West Carroll rally |

Four round-trippers by the Dresden Lions proved to be enough
to outlast a War Eagle rally on Wednesday afternoon as
Dresden took an 8-4 win over West Carroll at Dresden.
The Lions got on the board early as Greg Alderdice led off
the game with a single then scored on a catcher's error
later in the inning to put Dresden ahead 1-0.
Dresden got on the board again in the bottom of the second
inning as Dwayne Bailey led off the frame with a solo shot
to make the score 2-0 in favor of Dresden.
The Lions seemed to put the game out of reach in the bottom
of the third inning. A leadoff double by Alderdice was
followed by a walk to Justin Hatler. Matt Beaty then
followed with a three-run roundtripper to put Dresden ahead
5-0 after three innings.
Two innings later, Dresden got on the board again. Solo
homers from Hatler and Eric Evans gave the Lions a 7-0 lead
after five innings.
But, more than half of that lead was erased in the top of the
sixth inning. A leadoff double from Barry Moore and a pair
of walks loaded the bases. Clint McClain was hit by a pitch
to score a run. Walks to Brandon Luther and Tyler Nelson
scored two more before McClain scored on a passed ball to
cut the lead to 7-4. However, Hatler (the third pitcher of
the frame for the Lions) came in with no outs and struck out
three straight to stop the bleeding and end the threat.
