Bennett strikes out 18 'Jackets in nine-inning win

By Jason Peevyhouse

Unearned runs were costly to both the Gleason Bulldogs and Greenfield Yellowjackets on Monday. Gleason, though, was able to overcome those mishaps and break a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth with a two-run double from Chase Griffin to take a 4-2 district win over rival Greenfield at Greenfield.
Neither team was able to get on the board until the bottom of the fourth. A walk to Cody Ricketts opened the inning. Ricketts advanced to third on two passed, then made it home on a failed pickoff play to break the scoreless tie and give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead after four innings.
But, Gleason got that run right back in the top of the fifth inning. A two-out single by Colin Bennett kept the inning alive. Much like Greenfield in the previous half inning, a failed pickoff play allowed Bennett to score and tied the game at 1-1.
A leadoff single in the top of the sixth by Griffin lead to a one-run double by Evan Orr to put the Dawgs ahead 2-1 after the top of the sixth.
A catcher's error in the bottom of the seventh put Colin Medling on and allowed him to reach second. Another error and a walk loaded the bases for Ty Smithson, who reached on an error to plate a run and tie the game at 2-2. But, before the Yellowjackets could claim victory, Bennett settled down and struck out the next two batters to send the game into extra innings.

The Dresden Lady Lions picked up a pair of important district wins on Thursday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from the Greenfield Lady 'Jackets at Greenfield.
In the opening game, a 13-run third innings clinched the 13-0 win for the Lady Lions, as well as a perfect game for starter Brooke Irvine. The Lady Lions were forced to fight off a late Greenfield rally before taking a 7-4 victory.

Greenfield Lady 'Jackets 0

In the majority of the Lady Lions losses this season, one inning has made the difference. On Thursday, the Dresden girls found the shoe on the other foot, getting 13 runs in the third inning to assure themselves of a win.
Neither team even had a hit going into the third inning. Megan McWherter changed that to lead off the frame, blasting a shot into centerfield for a double. Kaci Robbins followed with an RBI single. After a Jessica Parsley single, Erica Glisson plated two with a double to make the score 3-0. A catcher's error and a walk kept the rally going and Bridgette Bone followed with a two-run single. Two batters later, Irvine helped her own cause with a two-run error. An RBI single from Parsley and a two-run single by Glisson plated three more runs. Marlee Mason reached on an error for the second time in the inning to plate a run. By the time Mason scored on a passed ball, the Lady Lions held a 13-0 lead.

Gleason completes sweep of Dresden

By Jason Peevyhouse

While it would have been hard to top the previous day's extra inning contest, the Bulldogs and Lions did the best they could to do just that, as Gleason topped Dresden 3-2 in another eight-inning contest at Wilson Park on Tuesday afternoon.

As they did on Monday, Dresden got on the board first.  Justin Hatler knocked a single into centerfield, but an error allowed the senior pitcher to round the bases and give Dresden a 1-0 lead  after one inning of play.

The Lions added to that in the bottom of the third inning as Chris Peeler advanced home on a walk to put the Lions lead at 2-0 at the end of three innings.

But, that lead did not last much longer as the Bulldogs broke up a no-hit bit, shutout and tied the game in the top of the fourth inning all in one swing as Zach Wallace tied the game with a two-run blast to straight-away centerfield.
