Alvis Teague

    Alvis "Al" Teague, 85, of Davison, Michigan, died Friday, October 3 at Genesys Health Center in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Funeral services were Tuesday, October 7 at Allen Funeral Home in Davison with burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
    He retired from AC spark plug. He was born in Dresden in 1922 to the late Leamon and Vera Teague. He served in the 63rd Infantry Division during WWII.
    Survivors include his wife, Margaret Naideen; daughter, Charlotte Gail Lauderbaugh; sister, Josie Ruth McPeak; and two grandchildren.

Clara Ette Biggers

    Clara Ette Biggers, 85, of Dresden, died Thursday, October 2, 2008, at Martin Health and Rehab in Martin. Funeral services for Mrs. Biggers were held Saturday, October 4, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home in Dresden. Burial followed in New Hope Cemetery in Latham. Bro. Donald Doster officiated the services.
    Mrs. Biggers was a housewife and a Baptist by faith. She was born in Weakley County to the late Elmer Melton Mitchell. Mrs. Biggers was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Sherman Dewey Biggers; a daughter, Mary Jo Fortner; a son, Kenneth Biggers; and a sister, Creanes Miller Hurt.
    Mrs. Biggers is survived by a daughter, Barbara Davis of Dresden; a son, Paul Larry Biggers of St. Petersburg, Florida; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Edith Edwards Bowlin Masden

    Edith Edwards Bowlin Masden, 90, of Dresden, died Sunday, September 28, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral services for Mrs. Masden were held Friday, October 3, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Dresden. Burial followed in Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Dr. Don McCulley officiated the services.
    Mrs. Masden was a licensed funeral director and a member of the Dresden First Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Martin High School and UTJC in Martin. Mrs. Masden was born in Gleason to the late Charles Macon and Velma Cheek Allman Edwards, Sr.. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Masden was also preceded in death by two husbands, S.T. Bowlin and Woodrow Masden; a stepson, Dr. Ron Masden; two sisters, Elisabeth Darnell and Margaret Settle Barton; and a brother, Charles Macon Edwards, Jr.
    Mrs. Masden is survived by a stepdaughter, Dr. Penny Copas of Bowling Green, Kentucky; a stepson, Rev. Dan Masden of Danville, Kentucky; a sister-in-law, Aileen Campbell Edwards of Sharon; and seven nephews, Tommy Edwards of Knoxville, Jim Edwards of Bolivar, Tennessee, Sid Settle of Franklin, Ed Settle of Nashville, Charles Henry Darnell of Dresden, George Darnell of Owensboro, Kentucky, and Gene Darnell of Louisburg, North Carolina.

Floyd E. Starks

    Floyd E. Starks, 69, of the Latham community, died Thursday, October 2, 2008, at his home. Graveside services for Mr. Starks were held Saturday, October 4, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery in Dukedom. Elder Houston Patrick officiated the services.
    Mr. Starks was a truck driver for Crop Production Services in Palmersville. He was born February 9, 1939 in Lake County to the late Clarence Edward and Rebecca Louise (Tidwell) Starks. Mr. Starks had lived in the Latham community most of his life. In addition to his parents, Mr. Starks was also preceded in death by a brother, Waymon Starks; a sister, Wilma Ritz; and a grandchild, Austin Kildow.
    Mr. Starks is survived by his wife, whom he married July 8, 1979 at the Oakwood Restaurant in Dresden, Wanda Jane (Carney) Starks; a daughter, April Starks of Benton, Kentucky; a stepson, Ricky Harrison and wife Regina of Sharon; two brothers, Danny and Donald Starks, both of Amory, Mississippi; two sisters, Gladys Burress of Georgia, and Betty Smith of West Palm Beach, Florida; three grandchildren, Brandow Kildow, Heather and husband Carey Adams, and Jason Harrison; and one great-grandchild, Gracie Adams.

George W. Ford

    George W. Ford, 72, of Martin, died Tuesday, September 30, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral services for Mr. Ford were held Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home Chapel in Martin. Burial followed in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Michael Simmons and Rev. Allen Truell officiated the services.
    Mr. Ford was a retired truck driver for Wonder Bread Company and a member of East Side Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Ford was born March 23, 1936 to the late John Dudley Ford and Cornelia Vancleave Ford.
    Mr. Ford is survived by his wife, Michell Duncan Ford of Hickman, Kentucky; three sons, Craig Ford of Martin, Michael Ford of Jacksonville, Arkansas, and David Ford of Dresden; a brother, Finis Ray Ford of Chicago, Illinois; and two grandchildren, Matthew Mike Ford and Mercy Mariann Ford.

Jewell L. Hastings

    Jewell L. Hastings, 90, of South Fulton, died Monday, October 6, 2008, at Weakley County Rehab and Nursing Center in Dresden. Funeral services for Mrs. Hastings will be held today, Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Hornbeak Funeral Chapel in Fulton. Burial will follow in Obion County Memorial Gardens in Union City. Bro. Miles Mayo will officiate the services.
    Mrs. Hastings was a homemaker and a member of the Smith Church of Christ in South Fulton. She was born April 24, 1918 in Obion County to the late Jordan Alvin and Mina (Bondurant) Ferguson. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hastings was also preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Hastings; a daughter, Myra Taylor; two sisters; and two brothers.
    Mrs. Hastings is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Samma Hastings of Bruceton, and Larry and Trudy Hastings of South Fulton; five grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Juanita Johnson of South Fulton; and two brothers, Clifford Ferguson of South Fulton, and Ray Ferguson of Union City.

Judith Lynn Madden Goode

    Judith Lynn Madden Goode, 61, of Dresden, died Monday, September 29, 2008, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Goode were held Thursday, October 2, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Pastor Herb Halstead officiated the services.
    Mrs. Goode was a factory employee for Tyson Foods and was non-denominational by faith. She was born at Eglin Field Air Force Base Hospital in Florida to Jessee L. and Hilda C. Harwood Madden.
    Mrs. Goode is survived by her husband, Mr. Crazy Horse Goode of Dresden; a daughter, Kathie Lynn (Shawn) Castillo of Jackson; a son, Larry Dale Cheatham of San Rafael, California; four stepsons, Danny Ray Goode of Norfolk, Virginia, Ernie (Wendy) Goode of Gleason, Tony Goode of Dresden, and Kyle Goode of Dresden; a brother, David Matz of Dresden; four grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren.

LaRue Simpson Oliver

    LaRue Simpson Oliver, 85, of Palmersville, died Monday, September 29, 2008, at Henry County Medical Center in Paris. Funeral services for Mrs. Oliver were held Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at 12:00 noon at Union Chapel Church of Christ near Palmersville. Shannon Seaton and Tony Kelton officiated the services.
    Mrs. Oliver was a dispatcher for Yellow Cab and a retired seamstress. She attended Union Chapel Church of Christ near Palmersville and was a member of the Palmersville Chapter of Eastern Star. Mrs. Oliver was born January 3, 1923 in Weakley County to the late Claude and Lexie Rickman Simpson. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Oliver was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. "Pete" Oliver; and a grandson, Kent Montgomery.
    Mrs. Oliver is survived by a daughter, Sherry Montgomery of Palmersville; a son, Charles R. (Cindy) Oliver of Palmersville; sister-in-law, Eileen Nichols of Dresden; three grandchildren, Candy Whitney of Dresden, Kim Oliver of Chicago, Illinois, and Brent Montgomery of Palmersville; and five great-grandchildren.

Leroy Taylor

    Leroy Taylor, 83, of Martin, died Sunday, October 5, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral services for Mr. Taylor will be held today, Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Murphy Funeral Home Chapel in Martin. Burial will follow in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Kenneth Springer will officiate the services.
    Mr. Taylor was a retired supervisor having worked at the Milan Arsenal. He was also a veteran of the United States Army and was retired from the Tennessee Army National Guard. Mr. Taylor was a member of Broadway Baptist Church and a member of American Legion Post #55. He was born February 13, 1925 in Henry County to the late Edgar Lee Taylor and Louise Lamb Taylor. In addition to his parents, Mr. Taylor was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Kate Tuck and Ann Lawrence.
    Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Prince Taylor of Martin; a son, Mike Taylor (Pat) of Martin; a daughter, Donna Sims (David) of Sharon; a brother, Robert Taylor of Martin; a sister, Mina Powers of Lansing, Michigan; four grandchildren, Beth (Keith) Ramsey of Jackson, LeeAnn (Phil) Crowe of Martin, Sam Sims of Sharon, and Amy (Dave) Frankum of Union City; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mary Christine Russ

    Mary Christine Russ, 78, of Martin, died Monday, September 29, 2008, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. Funeral services for Ms. Russ were held Thursday, October 2, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home Chapel in Sharon. Burial followed in Hornbeak Cemetery in Greenfield. Vernon Smith and Eddie Hutchens officiated the services.
    Ms. Russ worked in the manufacturing industry. She was born November 26, 1929 in Weakley County.
    Ms. Russ is survived by a daughter, Diann Russ of Dresden; two sons, Roger Nesbitt of Dresden, and Tommy Russ of Martin; two brothers, Atlas Brewer of Martin, and Bitsy Brewer of Sharon; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mary Sue (Summers) Blackley

    Mary Sue (Summers) Blackley, 70, died October 4, 2008, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union City.
    Sue Blackley was born October 5, 1937 in Martin. She was the daughter of the late F.R. Sam Summers and Golden Clarice Summers of Martin. She married Billy Wilson Blackley of Obion, December 2, 1953 and joins him now. They were only parted by his death in 2007. She earned Bachelor and Masters in Education from the University of Tennessee at Martin. She taught first grade for 30 years beginning in Obion and retiring from Hillcrest Elementary in 2006. She was a long time member of the Obion Church of Christ. She was a member of DAR and Delta Kappa Gamma.
    Survivors include two sons, James Stephen Blackley and Daryl Wilson Blackley, both of Obion; her step-mother-in-law, Mary (Eaton) Blackley, also of Obion; four grandchildren, Daphne York of Martin, Stephanie Garrett of Dyersburg, Rebekah Carman of Union City, and Michael Jacksonville, North Carolina; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Martha Maynard of Lansing, Michigan.
    Services were held Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Obion Church of Christ with Roger Fisher officiating and Tim Fox leading singing.
    The family requests that memorials be made to the West Tennessee Children's Home, 170 Frank Lathem Rd., Pinson, TN 38366, St. Jude Hospital, or to a charity of your choice.

Robbie Copel Lackey

    Robbie Copel Lackey, 89, of Martin, died Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral services for Mrs. Lackey were held Saturday, October 4, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Murphy Funeral Home Chapel in Martin. Burial followed in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Mike Blake, Rev. Terry English, and Rev. Susan Varner officiated the services.
    Mrs. Lackey was retired from the cafeteria department at Martin Elementary School after 32 years of service. She was also a member of Freeman Chapel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Lackey was born July 24, 1919 in Greenfield to the late Prentiss Earl Copel and Almeedy Abnany Copel. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lackey was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas William (Jack) Lackey; a son, Rev. Jerry Lackey; and a grandson, Jordan Lackey.
    Mrs. Lackey is survived by a daughter, Glynda (Jerry Wayne) Connell of Sharon; three grandchildren, Randy Connell, Brent (LaMonica) Connell, and Debbie Dowdy; and two great-grandchildren, Amy Riggins and Courtney Connell.

Robert "Bobby" Glenn Leigh

    Robert "Bobby" Glenn Leigh, 48, of Dickson, died Monday, September 29, 2008, at his home. Graveside services for Mr. Leigh were held Thursday, October 2, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Eastside Cemetery in Martin. Bro. Wayne Perkins officiated the services.
    Mr. Leigh was formerly a truck driver for Roadway Truck Lines. He was born to the late Calvin Glenn and Virginia Clark Griffin Leigh in Martin.
    Mr. Leigh is survived by two sons, Taylor Leigh of Mississippi, and Hunter Leigh of Mississippi; a sister, Ann (John) Weis of Nunnelly, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

Wallace Howard Workman

    Wallace Howard Workman, 77, of Sidonia, died Thursday, October 2, 2008, at his home. Funeral services for Mr. Workman were held Sunday, October 5, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Terry English and Bro. Ray Lainhart officiated the services.
    Mr. Workman was a maintenance worker for the Weakley County Courthouse and a member of Travis Chapel Methodist Church. He was born in Palmersville to the late Theodore and Eddie Elmedia Perry Workman. In addition to his parents, Mr. Workman was also preceded in death by his first wife, Carrie Irene Tripp Workman; and a brother, Bobby Joe Workman.
    Mr. Workman is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Helen Workman of Sidonia; a daughter, Becky Cooper of Martin; two stepdaughters, Kay Gallimore of Sharon, and Linda Dykes of Mansfield, Tennessee; a son, Alan Workman of Key Largo, Florida; two stepsons, Harold Roberts of Bradford, and Randy Roberts of Dresden; two sisters, Faye McEntire of Dresden, and Bonnie Watson of Dresden; a brother, Ray Workman of Sharon; and seven grandchildren.

Willodean Myrick Hathcock

    Willodean Myrick Hathcock, 89, of Dresden, died Monday, September 29, 2008, at Weakley County Rehab and Nursing Center in Dresden. Graveside services for Mrs. Hathcock were held Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Dathan Arant officiated the services.
    Mrs. Hathcock was a housewife and a retired telephone operator. She was a member of the Caldonia Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Hathcock was born in Henry County to the late Albert Franklin and Della Mikel Myrick. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hathcock was also preceded in death by her husband, whom she married December 26, 1950, Mr. Bon B. Hathcock.
    Mrs. Hathcock is survived by a niece, Barbara Bramlett of Ocala, Florida; and two cousins, Leon "Buddy" Henderson of Whitlock, Tennessee, and David Bayers of Fulton, Kentucky.
