Cecil E. Vickers, Jr.
Cecil E. Vickers, Jr., 64, of Martin, died Sunday, March 2,
2008, at his home. Funeral services for Mr. Vickers will be
held Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Murphy
Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will follow in Travis Chapel
Cemetery in Dresden. Rev. Larry Reagan will officiate the
services.
Mr. Vickers worked security for Martin Brothers Timber &
Container Corp. He was born February 13, 1944 in Troy to the
late Cecil E. Vickers, Sr. and Velma Merrill Vickers. In
addition to his parents, Mr. Vickers was also preceded in
death by a brother, Jerry Vickers.
Mr. Vickers is survived by a son, David Vickers of
Tallahassee, Florida; two daughters, Jennifer (Chaco)
Garrigus of Martin, and Tricia (Mark) Brown of Holiday,
Tennessee; two half-brothers, Johnny Stout of Martin, and
Tracy Stout of Georgia; two sisters, Edna Wade of Paris, and
Velma Pleasant of Ocala, Florida; two half-sisters, Judy
Moon of Georgia, and Juanita Stockdale of Martin; and eight
grandsons.
Danny Paterson Crews
Danny Paterson Crews, 52, of Dresden, died Friday,
February 29, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in
Martin. Funeral services for Mr. Crews were held Monday,
February 3, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Dresden First Baptist
Church. Burial followed in on Mr. Crews' farm in Dresden.
Mr. Crews worked for the Weakley County Highway Department as
a truck driver. He was born March 7, 1955 in Dresden to the
late Alanzo and Cathaline Johnson Crews. In addition to his
parents, Mr. Crews was also preceded in death by a brother,
Alanzo Crews.
Mr. Crews is survived by his wife, Sharon Rhodes of Dresden;
two sons, Danny Crews, II of Dresden, and Tim Rhodes of
Martin; a daughter, Danielle Crews of Dresden; three
brothers, Jack Crews of North Carolina, Glen Crews of Town
Creek, Alabama, and James Crews of Dresden; two sisters,
Edna Carey of Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Elizabeth Pogue
of Dresden; and two grandchildren.
Deloris Bynum Wilson
Deloris Bynum Wilson, 72, of Martin, died Thursday, February
28, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Mrs. Wilson were held Sunday, March 2, 2008, at
3:30 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed
in Bible Union Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Terry Griffin
officiated the services.
Mrs. Wilson was retired from Hubbell Lighting Company. She
was born October 30, 1935 in Martin to the late Wayne Bynum
and Ilar Mae Westerman Bynum.
Mrs. Wilson is survived by two sons, Mark Wilson of Sharon,
and Matthew Wilson of Dickson; a daughter, Debbie Baker of
Martin; a brother, Roger Bynum of Nashville; two sisters,
Betty Wilson of Martin, and Lottie Pelledo of Paducah,
Kentucky; eleven grandchildren; and twelve
great-grandchildren.
Dennis Allen Barnes
Dennis Allen Barnes, 44, of Nashville, died Wednesday,
February 27, 2008, at Vanderbilt Medical Center in
Nashville. Funeral services for Mr. Barnes were held Friday,
February 29, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Gallimore Funeral Home
Chapel in Gleason. Burial followed in Hopewell Cemetery in
Gleason. Rev. Gene Price officiated the services.
Mr. Barnes was born October 28, 1963 in McKenzie.
Mr. Barnes is survived by his father, Hollis T. Barnes of
Ohio; his mother and stepfather, Ruth Franklin Pryor and
Steve Pryor of Gleason; and a half-sister, Robin Mayo of
Union City.
Elmer Melton
Elmer Melton, 90, of Martin, died Tuesday, February 26, 2008,
at his home on Hyndsver Road. Funeral services for Mr.
Melton were held Friday, February 29, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at
Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in
Good Springs Cemetery in Dukedom. Bro. Dewayne Thomas
officiated the services.
Mr. Melton was a farmer and a member of Pleasant View Baptist
Church near Dukedom. He was a native of Lake County and the
son of the late Lee and Jessie March Banks Melton. In
addition to his parents, Mr. Melton was also preceded in
death by his wife, Mrs. Mildred Louise Woodruff Melton.
Mr. Melton is survived by two sons, Danny (Tina) Stafford of
Martin, and Ray (Sammie) Stafford of Palmersville; three
grandchildren, Regina (Clay) Lindsey, Lori (Eddie) Suiter,
and Randy Dycus; and five great-grandchildren, Hunter and
Austin Lindsey, Will, Abby, and Maggie Suiter.
Elsie Louise Ary
Elsie Louise Ary, 90, of Martin, died Friday, February 29,
2008, at Martin Health Care. Funeral services for Mrs. Ary
were held Sunday, March 2, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Gardner
Church of Christ. Burial followed in Tansil Cemetery in
Sharon. Bro. Larry Powers, Bro. Rick Lawson, and Bro. Roy
Sharp officiated the services.
Mrs. Ary was retired from food service at Volunteer General
Hospital and was a member of Gardner Church of Christ. She
was born April 20, 1917 in Gibson County to the late Grady
Phillips and Alma Ary Phillips. In addition to her parents,
Mrs. Ary was also preceded in death by two sons, Kyle B. Ary,
Jr. and Robert Birdette Ary; a daughter, June Ary Tipton;
and two sisters, Lucy Garner and Ruby Phillips.
Mrs. Ary is survived by her husband, Mr. Kyle Birdette Ary of
Martin; three daughters, Wanda Clements of Martin, Cecil Ary
Ghormley of Lakeland, Tennessee, and Kay Gardner of Martin;
a sister, Betty Jo Tipton of Walls, Mississippi; twelve
grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren.
James Allen Barner
James Allen Barner, 81, of Martin, died Wednesday, February
27, 2008, at Martin Health Care. Funeral services for Mr.
Barner were held Saturday, March 1, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. at
Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed in East Side
Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Tom Doty officiated the services.
Mr. Barner was a retired dairy farmer. Before his retirement,
he owned and operated Barner Dairy Farm with his sons. Mr.
Barner was also a member of Broadway Baptist Church and was
an elected member of the Weakley County Commission. He was
born August 18, 1926 in the Alamo Community in Obion County
to the late Bertrand Barner and Clydie Mae Moore Barner.
Mr. Barner is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lois Garner Barner
of Martin; three sons, Doug (Debbie) Barner of Martin, Ray
(Nancy) Barner of Martin, and Donnie (Teresa) Barner of
Martin; two brothers, Walter Taylor Barner of Jasper,
Alabama, and Earl Dean Barner of Sharon; two sisters, Martha
Katherine Lefevera of New Concord, Kentucky, and Jean Speed
of Florida; seven grandchildren, Tiffany Winston, Angelia
Walters, Josh Barner, Cody Barner, Dusty Barner, Derek
Barner, and Justin Bell; and seven great-grandchildren.
Kenneth F. Harding
Kenneth F. Harding, 57, of Martin, died Wednesday, February
27, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at VanAyer Manor Nursing Home in
Martin. Funeral services for Mr. Harding were held Saturday,
March 1, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in
Martin. Burial followed in East Side Cemetery in Martin.
Mr. Harding was born November 15, 1950. He was preceded in
death by his father, Artell Harding.
Mr. Harding is survived by his mother, Mrs. Edna Prince
Harding of Martin.
Mary Katherine Snider
Mary Katherine Snider, 83, died February 22, 2008, at her
home in Gleason. Funeral services for Mrs. Snider were held
Tuesday, February 26, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral
Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in New Valley
Cemetery in Gleason. Bro. Bob Copeland officiated the
services.
Mrs. Snider was a former factory worker for H.I.S. and a
member of Mack's Grove Baptist Church. She was born in
Gleason to the late Robert B. and Annie B. Page McGee. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Snider was also preceded in
death by her husband, Mr. Houston "Hootie" Snider.
Mrs. Snider is survived by three daughters, Dolores Chapell
of Gleason, Shirley Perry of Palmersville, and Nancy Adcock
of Dresden; four sisters, Barbara Haney of South Carolina,
Marjorie Mansfield of Dresden, Juanita Haney of Lansing,
Michigan, and Diane Walter of Lansing, Michigan; five
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and twenty-one
great-great-grandchildren.
Ruth Carolyn Wilson Smith
Ruth Carolyn Wilson Smith, 82, of Martin, died Monday,
February 25, 2008, at Martin Health Care. Funeral services
for Mrs. Smith were held Thursday, February 28, 2008, at
1:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed
in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Bob Conley officiated
the services.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a member of Adams Chapel
Baptist Church. She was born May 27, 1925 in Gibson County
to the late Earnest Wilson and Callie Scott Wilson. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was also preceded in
death by her husband, Roy Wendell Smith.
Mrs. Smith is survived by two daughters, Donna Wright of
Martin, and Sandra Cochran of Martin; three brothers, Ralph
Wilson of Sharon, Gerald Wilson of Adamsville, and Bob
Wilson of Atwood; four grandchildren, Kenny Bynum, Bryan
Harding, Courtney Harding, and Ashley Harding, all of
Martin; and one great-grandchild, Wesley Blake Harding.
