Alene Abernathy Bynum
Alene Abernathy Bynum, 81, of Dresden, died May 23, 2008, at
her home. Graveside services for Mrs. Bynum were held
Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Palmersville
Cemetery. Rev. Paul McAdoo officiated the services.
Mrs. Bynum was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith. She was
a 1943 Palmersville High School graduate, past President of
the Democratic Women, a member of the Dresden Garden Club,
and past member of the Iris Festival Committee. She was born
in Palmersville to the late James Clarence "J.C." and
Hassalle S. Todd Abernathy. In addition to her parents, Mrs.
Abernathy was also preceded in death by her husband, Mr.
Paul Thomas Bynum; and a brother, Russell Abernathy, Sr.
Mrs. Bynum is survived by two sons, Landon Bynum of Pilot
Oak, Kentucky, and Anthony Bynum of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania;
three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Alfred L. Danner
Alfred L. Danner, 65, of Martin, died Friday, May 23, 2008,
at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Funeral services
for Mr. Danner were held Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at 11:00
a.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed in
Martin Memorial Garden. Rev. David Rogers and Freddie
Brasfield officiated the services.
Mr. Danner, before retirement, owned and operated Bill's Auto
Parts and was a Baptist by faith. Mr. Danner was a veteran
of the National Guard. He was born January 29, 1943 in
Chicago, Illinois to the late Freeman Danner and Louella
Adams Danner. In addition to his parents, Mr. Danner was
also preceded in death by his wife, Carol Clark Danner.
Mr. Danner is survived by a son, Steve Danner of Glasgow,
Kentucky; a daughter, Regina Vickers of Martin; a brother,
Larry Danner of Denver, Colorado; and five sisters, Betty
Lou Smith of Dresden, Linda Sandefer of Nashville, Pam Kemp
of Dresden, Karen Riddick of Nashville, and Nancy Carter of
Medina.
Bernice I. Sandefer
Bernice I. Sandefer, 91, of Martin, died Saturday, May 24,
2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Graveside
services for Mrs. Sandefer were held Wednesday, May 28,
2008, at 1:00 p.m. at East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev.
Bill Tate officiated the services.
Mrs. Sandefer was a homemaker and a member of the First
United Methodist Church. She was born August 13, 1916 in
Chicago, Illinois to the late Anthony Volmann and Mary
Getselman. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sandefer was
also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Navatny.
Mrs. Sandefer is survived by her husband, Mr. Isaac Sandefer
of Martin.
Billy H. Monroe
Billy H. Monroe, 84, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at
his home in Toledo. He was born in Greenfield in July 27,
1923, to Clarence and Linnie (Medling) Monroe. A veteran of
the US Navy Seabees, he worked for the Dura Corporation as a
Millwright for over 40 years retiring in 1988. Mr. Monroe
was a very active and dedicated member of Frey Road Church
of Christ.
Mr. Monroe is survived by his sons, Jeffrey "Keith", Randy
(Marilyn), Kevin (Rita), and Neil (Debbie) Monroe; daughter,
Cynthia Duda; brothers, Joe and Sam (Jenny Lee) Monroe;
sisters, Alene Smith, Christeen Monroe, and Doris (Ray)
Foster; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by his parents; brother, L.C.; sister,
Bernice Dunn; sister-in-law, Martha Monroe; and
brother-in-law, Russell Smith.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Williams
Funeral Home in Greenfield. Interment followed at Brock's
Cemetery. Rev. Brent Arnold officiated the services.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest
Ohio.
Bobby J. Scott
Bobby J. Scott died May 17, 2008, at Methodist Hospital in
Memphis. He was born on July 17, 1939 in Somerville,
Tennessee to the late Mr. Henry and Mrs. Mary Durham Scott.
He moved to Martin early in life and worked for the late
Wilson and Catherine Vaughan, laying carpet. He later sold
insurance until his retirement.
Mr. Scott is survived by his wife, Brenda Scott of Memphis;
two sons, James D. (Diedre) Scott of Martin, and Michael
Scott of Memphis; a sister, Mary Ann Taylor of Martin;
grandchildren; and a host of cousins, other relatives and
friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at Fuller Street
Baptist Church in Dresden. Burial followed in Parham
Cemetery in Martin.
Cecil V. Hammonds
Cecil V. Hammonds, 93, of Dresden, died Saturday, May 31,
2008, at Hillview Community Living Center in Dresden.
Funeral services for Mr. Hammonds were held Monday, June 2,
2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden.
Burial followed in Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Nathan
Horton officiated the services.
Mr. Hammonds was a retired truck driver for the Weakley
County Highway Department and a member of Siloam General
Baptist Church in Dresden. He was born in Dresden to the
late Earl and Emma McClain Hammonds. In addition to his
parents, Mr. Hammonds was also preceded in death by his
wife, Mrs. Mary Frances Ellis; a daughter, Shirley Fay
Taylor; two sisters; and three brothers.
Mr. Hammonds is survived by two sons, Jimmy Hammonds of
Greenfield, and Adrian Dee Hammonds of Dresden; eight
grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Frances Ruth Finch
Frances Ruth Finch, 86, of Gleason, died Sunday, June 1,
2008, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Finch will be
held Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Gleason First
United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Hopewell
Cemetery. Rev. Mike Jeffers will officiate the services.
Mrs. Finch was a retired business woman and a member of the
Gleason First United Methodist Church. She was born January
7, 1922 in Gleason to the late Cletus and Zela (Young)
Trevathan. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Finch was also
preceded in death by her husband, Merrell Finch; and a son,
Buddy Finch.
Mrs. Finch is survived by a daughter, Pam McCulley of
Germantown; three grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
Imogene Hales Jones
Imogene Hales Jones, 85, of Martin, died Wednesday, May 28,
2008, at Martin Health Care. Funeral services for Mrs. Jones
were held Saturday, May 31, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at New Home
Baptist Church. Burial followed in Woods Cemetery in Martin.
Rev. Scott Chadwick officiated the services.
Mrs. Jones was the former manager of Willow Brook Country
Club in Lakeside, California and a member of New Home
Baptist Church. She was born June 2, 1922 in Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma to the late Chester Hales, Sr. and Emma Gene Smith
Hales. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jones was also
preceded in death by her husband, Winfred Jones.
Mrs. Jones is survived by two sons, Richard Allen Jones
(Donna May) of Belchertown, Massachusetts, and Michael Ray
Jones (Rosalee) of Santa Maria, California; a daughter,
Denise Marcia Burdette (James) of Martin; a brother, Chester
Hales, Jr. (Dorothy) of University Place, Washington; three
grandchildren, Rebecca Jones Baldizon, Brandon Benkosky, and
Felicia Benkosky Farr; and nine step-grandchildren, William
Burdette, Kevin Burdette, Clark Burdette, Aleia Levine,
Hannah Wijeratra, Jessie Levine, Joel Martin, Cheryl Martin,
and Laura Rose Bepbrry.
James A. Borden, Jr.
James A. Borden, Jr., 70, of Elmhurst, Illinois, died
Saturday, May 24, 2008, at his home. Funeral services for
Mr. Borden were held Saturday, May 31, 2008, at 11:00 a.m.
at Shepherd's Field Church. Burial followed in Alamo
Cemetery in Rives. Rev. Fady AlHagal officiated the
services.
Mr. Borden was retired from Riley Heating Company working as
heating and air conditioning repair man and installer. He
was also a member of the New Church. Mr. Borden was born
November 6, 1937 in Moulton, Alabama to the late James A.
Borden, Sr. and Ora Bunnell Borden. In addition to his
parents, Mr. Borden was also preceded in death by three
sisters, Elsie Tanksley, Bildred Frost, and Cathy Hatcher;
and two brothers, Herschel Borden and Jerry Borden.
Mr. Borden is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sue Ridgeway Borden
of Elmhurst, Illinois; three daughters, Pamela Harris (Bob)
of Martin, Teresa Turnbow of Union City, and Melanie Borden
of Schaumburg, Illinois; a brother, Nathaniel (Bud) Borden
(Joan) of Moulton, Alabama; five sisters, Evelyn Pierce of
Elgin, Illinois, Opal Horton of Moulton, Alabama, Mavis
Naylor (Carl) of Moulton, Alabama, Syble Etheridge of
Athens, Alabama, and Ann Murphree of Moulton, Alabama; five
grandchildren, Eric Carter (Stephanie), Aaron Carter, Seth
Harris, Chris Turnbow, and Cory Turnbow; and three
great-grandchildren.
James Buckley Bell
James Buckley Bell, 72, of Martin, died Sunday, June 1, 2008,
at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral services
for Mr. Bell will be held Thursday, June 5, 2008, at 11:00
a.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will follow in
East Side Cemetery. Rev. Claude Prince and Rev. Richard
Brewer will officiate the services.
Mr. Bell was retired from Hubbell Lighting Corporation and
was a member of Ralston Baptist Church. He was also a
veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Bell was born March
6, 1936 in Martin to the late Harry C. Bell and Janette
Lampton Bell. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bell was also
preceded in death by a son, Mark Bell.
Mr. Bell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Ruth Daniels Bell
of Martin; three sons, Darrel (Natalie) Bell of Corinth,
Mississippi, Jeff Bell of Smyrna, Tennessee, and Adam Bell
of Mesa, Arizona; a stepson, Scotty Wade of Martin; a
stepdaughter, Debbie Travis of Martin; two brothers, Larry
Bell of Yuma, and David Keith Bell of Virginia; and eight
grandchildren.
James Milam Webb
James Milam Webb, 94, of McKenzie, died Tuesday, May 27,
2008, in McKenzie. Funeral services for Mr. Webb were held
Saturday, May 31, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Gallimore Funeral
Home Chapel in Gleason. Burial followed in Hopewell Cemetery
in Gleason. Rev. Jo Nell Copeland and Rev. Keith Pence
officiated the services.
Mr. Webb was a welder for Navistor Corporation and was a
member of Blooming Grove Methodist Church in McKenzie. He
was born January 13, 1914 in Gleason to the late Robert and
Sudie Milam Mitchell Webb.
Mr. Webb is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Lasater Webb of
McKenzie; a son, Robert Webb of Chicago, Illinois; a
daughter, Delores Friedman of McKenzie; a brother, Oscar Lee
Webb of Paris; six grandchildren; thirteen
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Mattie Louise Alexander Milner
Mattie Louise Alexander Milner, 89, of Martin, died Saturday,
May 24, 2008, at Martin Health Care. Graveside services for
Mrs. Milner were held Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at 4:00 p.m. at
East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. David Brown officiated
the services.
Mrs. Milner was a retired beautician and a member of the
First Baptist Church. She was born September 15, 1918 to the
late Drury Alexander and Maude Lee Chappell Alexander. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Milner was also preceded in
death by her husband, Hulon Milner; and two brothers, Horace
D. Alexander and Harry Alexander.
Mrs. Milner is survived by a sister, Mary Kathryn Reed of
Santee, California.
Naomi Ward
Naomi Ward, 85, of Greenfield, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008,
at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral services
for Mrs. Ward were held Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Beech
Grove Church in Rutherford. Authur Hannah officiated the
services.
Mrs. Ward was a housewife and a Baptist by faith. She was
born November 17, 1922 in Rutherford to the late Louis
Martin and Lizzie Wright.
Reba Estelle Smith
Reba Estelle Smith, 87, of Greenfield, died Wednesday, May
28, 2008, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Smith were
held Friday, May 30, 2008, at 11:30 a.m. at Williams Funeral
Home in Greenfield. Burial followed in Centerville Cemetery
in Medina. Bro. Joe Lusby officiated the services.
Mrs. Smith was a telephone operator for AT&T. She attended
the First Baptist Church in Greenfield and was a lifelong
member of The Church of God in Sarasota, Florida. Mrs. Smith
was born May 22, 1921 in Milan to the late George Butler and
Reba Irene Holcomb.
Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Roy E. (Bubba) Smith of
Nashville, Tennessee; a stepson, Robert Smith of Kempner,
Texas; a daughter, Jeanie McQuinn of Germantown, Tennessee;
a stepdaughter, Barbara Stevens of Panama City, Florida; and
four grandchildren.
Rev. Patricia Bernice Cavitt
Rev. Patricia Bernice Cavitt, 74, was born on July 22, 1933.
She was the daughter of the late Mr. John Amos Cavitt and
the late Mrs. Louise Maize.
Rev. Cavitt accepted Christ early in life and accepted God's
call to preach the gospel. She died Saturday, May 17, 2008,
at her home. Graveside services were held on Wednesday at
Greenlea Cemetery in Fulton. Rev. Joe W. Beal officiated the
services.
Rev. Cavitt is survived by her niece, Paula Cavitt; and
cousin, Felicia Lightner, both of South Fulton; and other
relatives and friends.
Tom Riggins
Funeral services for Mr. Tom Riggins, age 74, of Fayetteville
were held Tuesday, at 7:00 .m. at Higgins Funeral Home with
Rev. Kirk Smith officiating. Burial followed Wednesday at
1:00 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Milan. Mr. Riggins passed
away Saturday evening at Baptist Hospital in Nashville.
A native of Weakley County, he was a son of the late Paul D.
and Casie Pentecost Riggins. He graduated from the
University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy in Oxford,
Mississippi and was a veteran of the US Army. He was an
elder of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a member of
Kelso Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mr. Riggins was a past
president of Fifth District Drug Association of Tennessee in
1965, a Shriner, and past president of Fayetteville Golf and
Country Club. He moved to Fayetteville in 1964 and opened
Riggins City Drugs. In later years, he was a pharmacist with
CVS Pharmacies.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Galloway Riggins of
Fayetteville; son, Dr. Matthew Paul Riggins and wife Sara of
Piney Flats, Tennessee; daughter, Pamela Sue Riggins
Callahan and husband Kevin of Memphis; brother, Russell R.
Riggins of Martin; three grandchildren, Daniel Thomas and
Katie Elaine Callahan both of Memphis, and Ian James Riggins
of Piney Flats, Tennessee. He is preceded in death by a
sister, Elizabeth Nan Riggins.
Velma E. Collier
Velma E. Collier, 91, of Martin, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008,
at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral services
for Mrs. Collier were held Friday, May 30, 2008, at 1:00
p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed in
East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. J.T. Brown officiated the
services.
Mrs. Collier was a homemaker and a Pentecostal by faith. She
was born August 19, 1916 in Dresden. Mrs. Collier was
preceded in death by her husband, John L. Collier; and a
daughter, Doris Short.
Mrs. Collier is survived by two sons, Billy Wayne Pope of
Dresden, and Michael Everett Pope of Gleason; two daughters,
Enola Bucklew of Dresden, and Bonnie Walters of Dresden; a
brother, James Sutherland of Chicago, Illinois; twenty-one
grandchildren; thirty-five great-grandchildren; and
forty-six great-great-grandchildren.
