Charles Ray Castellaw
Charles Ray Castellaw, 85, of Springville, Tennessee, died
Monday, June 30, 2008, at the Veteran's Hospital in
Nashville. Funeral services for Mr. Castellaw were held
Thursday, July 3, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home
Chapel in Martin. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in
Sharon. Rev. Joe Williams officiated the services.
Mr. Castellaw formerly taught agriculture at Sharon and
Westview High Schools. At the time of his retirement, he was
Director of Vocational Education for Weakley County Schools.
Mr. Castellaw was also a veteran of WWII. He was born May
28, 1923 in Haywood County to the late Robert Jefferson
Castellaw and May Rassmann Castellaw. In addition to his
parents, Mr. Castellaw was also preceded in death by his
first wife, Sarah Stoker Castellaw; two sons, Michael Ray
Castellaw and John Neal Castellaw; and a brother, Carl
Jefferson Castellaw.
Mr. Castellaw is survived by his wife, Betty Jo Matthews
Castellaw of Springville; a son, Charles Robert Castellaw of
Memphis; and a sister, Zuline Blackburn of Bells, Tennessee.
Charles Ray Hunt
Charles Ray Hunt, 45, of Lowell, Indiana, died Wednesday,
June 25, 2008 at his place of work. Funeral services for Mr.
Hunt were held Sunday, June 29, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at
Gallimore Funeral Home Chapel in Gleason. Burial followed in
Hopewell Cemetery. Mike Stigall and Darren Wilson officiated
the services.
Mr. Hunt was a machinist V.P. He was born September 30, 1962
in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Hunt was preceded in death by his
father, Raybon (Sonny) Hunt.
Mr. Hunt is survived by a son, Brandon Hunt of Schaumburg,
Illinois; two daughters, Megan Rae Hunt of Schaumburg,
Illinois, and Brittany Ann Hunt of Schaumburg, Illinois; his
mother, Barbara (Holland) Hunt; a brother, Kevin Hunt of
Crown Point, Illinois; three sisters, Rhonda Foss of
Romeoville, Illinois, Donna Stigall of Martin, and Lisa
Reiss of Elgin, Illinois; and his former wife, Marijo
Police.
Henrietta Matheny Murphey
Henrietta Matheny Murphey, 80, of Dresden, died Wednesday,
July 2, 2008, at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky.
Funeral services for Mrs. Murphey were held Saturday, July
5, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Dresden Church of Christ. Burial
followed in Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Danny Douglas, Bobby
Crittendon, and Mike Tucker officiated the services.
Mrs. Murphey was a retired title abstractor for Harold
Brundige Law Office and a member of Dresden Church of
Christ. She was born February 26, 1928 in Paris to the late
Clifford Alford and Bertha Lee Owens Dinkins. In addition to
her parents, Mrs. Murphey was also preceded in death by her
husbands, G.W. Matheny, Henry Karlsson, and S.L. Murphey;
ten sisters; and two brothers.
Mrs. Murphey is survived by three daughters, Kay Ellis of
Nashville, Beverly (Mitchell) Parham of Dresden, and Rita
(William) Perkins of Dresden; two sons, James H. (Carol)
Matheny of Pilot Oak, Kentucky, and Ronnie Matheny of
Sullivan, Missouri; a sister, Betty Floyd of Murfreesboro,
Tennessee; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Jeffery Alan Freeman
Jeffery Alan Freeman, 50, of Dresden, died Saturday, July 5,
2008, at Methodist Hospital in Memphis. Funeral services for
Mr. Freeman were held Monday, July 7, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at
Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in
Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Donald Doster officiated
the services.
Mr. Freeman was a railroad carman for Union Pacific Railroad
and a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church in Memphis. He was
born in Union City to Cornelia Nell Gatewood Freeman of
Bartlett, Tennessee, and the late Calvin Eugene "Gene"
Freeman.
Survivors other than his mother, include two brothers, Keith
Lynn (Angie) Freeman of Louisville, Kentucky, and Dale Gene
Freeman of Memphis.
Lillian Cleo Fromm
Lillian Cleo Fromm, 80, of Martin, died Monday, June 30,
2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Mrs. Fromm were held Thursday, July 3, 2008, at
1:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home Chapel in Martin. Burial
followed in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Dwayne Maxey
officiated the services.
Mrs. Fromm was a secretary and a homemaker. She was born
September 11, 1927 in Sharon to the late Bruce Jackson
Garner and Anne Forrester Garner. In addition to her
parents, Mrs. Fromm was also preceded in death by her
husband, Edward Neal Fromm, Sr.; and a sister, Thelma Hof.
Mrs. Fromm is survived by a son, Edward Neal Fromm, Jr. of
Grayslake, Illinois; two daughters, Patricia Abrams of
Martin, and Marcia Fromm of Brookfield, Illinois; a sister,
Relma Dubiel of Martin; a brother, Foster Garner of
Springfield, Illinois; a brother-in-law, Irv Hof of Martin;
three grandchildren, Amy Beth Fromm, Jeremy Alan Fromm, and
Penny Rice; and a great-granddaughter, Donna Lynn Rice.
Lucian H. Major
Lucian H. Major, 72, of Martin, died Friday, July 4, 2008, at
Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral services for
Mr. Major were held Monday, July 7, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at
Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed in East Side
Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Gerry Gallimore and Rev. Lewis
Whiteman officiated the services.
Mr. Major was retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Corp. and
a member of Cypress Creek Baptist Church. He was also a
member of Northwest Tennessee Football Officials
Association. Mr. Major was a veteran of the United States
Army. He was born September 19, 1935 in Obion County to the
late Lucian Anderson Major and Frances Roper Major Murphy.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Major was also preceded in
death by a brother, Frank Major.
Mr. Major is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Sue Prince Major
of Martin; a son, Jerry Major of Jackson; a daughter,
Michelle Granner of Martin; a brother, Jim Major of
Tullahoma, Tennessee; and two grandsons, Matt Granner and
James Major.
Marsha Perry Boggess
Marsha Perry Boggess, 65, of Seattle, Washington, died June
27, 2008, at Arbor View Medical Center. Graveside services
for Ms. Boggess were held Thursday, July 3, 2008, at 3:00
p.m. at New Prospect Cemetery in Greenfield.
Ms. Boggess was born January 17, 1943 in Greenfield to the
late Doyce Perry and Mildred Guffie.
Ms. Boggess is survived by a sister, Pat (Perry) Alexander of
Martin.
Mary Lee Klutts
Mary Lee Klutts, 89, of Dresden, died Sunday, July 6, 2008,
at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral services
for Mrs. Klutts were held Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at 11:00
a.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial
followed in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Jim
Calhoun and Bro. Dan Leslie officiated the services.
Mrs. Klutts was a retired seamstress for Kellwood Corporation
and a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in
Dresden. She was born in Weakley County to the late James
Luther and Ivy Pearl Green Allen. In addition to her
parents, Mrs. Klutts was also preceded in death by her
husband, Mr. Jessie B. Klutts; a sister, Merrell Dawson; two
brothers, Basil Allen and Charles Gene Allen; and a
great-grandson, Justin Woodruff.
Mrs. Klutts is survived by a daughter, Virginia (H.B.)
Elliott of Atlanta, Georgia; two sons, Bobby (Maedell)
Klutts of Dresden, and Jack (Sandra) Klutts of Dresden;
seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.
Maxine Workman
Maxine Workman, 83, of Palmersville, died June 28, 2008, at
Weakley County Rehab and Nursing Center in Dresden. Funeral
services for Mrs. Workman were held Tuesday, July 1, 2008,
at 10:00 a.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden.
Burial followed in Unity Cemetery near Dresden. Mr. Steve
Boone and Mr. Bob Bennett officiated the services.
Mrs. Workman was a retired seamstress for Kellwood
Manufacturing and a member of Union Grove Church of Christ
in Palmersville. She was born in Weakley County to the late
James H. and Lula Nanney Woodruff. In addition to her
parents, Mrs. Workman was also preceded in death by her
husband, Mr. J.W. Workman; and two brothers, Buford Woodruff
and Junior Woodruff.
Mrs. Workman is survived by a daughter, Susie (Lee) Bennett
of Palmersville; one granddaughter, Tina (Chris) Nobles of
Palmersville; and great-grandchildren, April, Christina and
soon to arrive Jamie Nobles of Palmersville.
Nathaniel "Bud" Murel Smith
Nathaniel "Bud" Murel Smith, 78, of Martin, died Thursday,
July 3, 2008, at his home. Funeral services for Mr. Smith
were held Monday, July 7, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Bowlin
Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in Eastside
Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Wendell Jellison and Rev. Wayne
Spencer officiated the services.
Mr. Smith was a foundry worker for Harvard Industries and a
member of First United Methodist Church of Martin. He was
born in Weeksbury, Kentucky to the late George and Beulah
Wells Smith. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was also
preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Mrs. Patricia Sue Tackett
Smith of Martin; three daughters, Niadetta Lea Manthei of
Columbia, South Carolina, Sadonna Mae London of Martin, and
Ritha Renee Howell of Albion, Michigan; cousins, Donnie
Lawson of Columbus, Ohio, Lois McKibben of Columbus, Ohio,
and Carol Elkins of Columbus, Ohio; eleven grandchildren;
and six great-grandchildren.
Newton Smith, Jr.
Newton Smith, Jr., 87, of South Fulton, died Tuesday, July 1,
2008, at Parkview Hospital in Fulton, Kentucky. Graveside
services for Mr. Smith were held Thursday, July 3, 2008, at
5:30 p.m. at Obion Chapel Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Ron Cox
officiated the services.
Mr. Smith was retired from Illinois Central-Gulf Railroad and
was a member of South Fulton Baptist Church. He was born
February 7, 1921 in Haleyville, Alabama to the late Newton
Smith and Daisy Lee Gill Smith. In addition to his parents,
Mr. Smith was also preceded in death by a sister, Naomi
Jackson.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Mrs. Norma Jo Moss Smith
of South Fulton; a son, Jeffery Smith of Martin; and a
sister, Christine Bradberry of Martin.
Opal L. Kennedy
Opal L. Kennedy, 82, of Gleason, died June 30, 2008, at
Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Memorial services
for Mrs. Kennedy were held Sunday, July 6, 2008, at 2:00
p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church in Dresden. Burial was
in Memorial Gardens in Woodstock, Illinois.
Mrs. Kennedy was a retired chef for Cary Country Club. She
was a native of Hamburg, Iowa and the daughter of the late
Clyde and Eva Richardson O'Brien. In addition to her
parents, Mrs. Kennedy was also preceded in death by a
sister, Laura Motzinger; and two brothers, Tommy Motzinger
and Clyde O'Brien.
Mrs. Kennedy is survived by her husband, Mr. James William
Kennedy of Gleason; three daughters, Jean Lawrence of
Crystal Lake, Illinois, Laurel Seymore of Crystal Lake,
Illinois, and Ginger Crawford of Smyrna, Tennessee; a
brother, William Motzinger of Omaha, Nebraska; and a
grandson, Robert Seymore of Chicago, Illinois.
Robert Thompson Ferrell
Robert Thompson Ferrell, 78, of Dresden, died Wednesday, July
2, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Mr. Ferrell were held Saturday, July 5, 2008,
at 11:00 a.m. at Adams Chapel Baptist Church in Dresden.
Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Sharon. Bro. Larry
Reagan officiated the services.
Mr. Ferrell was a retired factory worker from Quebecor World
and a member of Adams Chapel Baptist Church. He was also a
veteran of the United States Army having served in Korea. He
was born in Weakley County to the late William E. "Bill" and
Florence Maxey Ferrell. In addition to his parents, Mr.
Ferrell was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Nannie
Abernathy Ferrell; two sisters, Dorothy Kehoe and Ruby Nell
Barker; and a brother, Carl Ferrell.
Mr. Ferrell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betty June Prince
Ferrell of Dresden; a daughter, Barbara (Joe) Farmer of
Dresden; two sons, David (Becky) Ferrell of Collierville,
Tennessee, and Richard (Barbara) Ferrell of Sharon; a
sister, Marie Dozier of Louisville, Kentucky; a brother,
Harold Ferrell of West Palm Beach, Florida; seven
grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Shirley J. Griffin
Shirley J. Griffin, 69, of McKenzie, died Monday, July 7,
2008, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Griffin were
held Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral
Home in Greenfield. Burial followed in Pilgrims Rest
Cemetery in McKenzie.
Mrs. Griffin was a former factory worker for H.I.S.
Industries. She was born November 23, 1938 to the late C.A.
Tate and Lucille (Byrum) Tate. In addition to her parents,
Mrs. Griffin was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe
Griffin; and a sister, Mildred Cooper.
Mrs. Griffin is survived by a son, Ricky Griffin of McKenzie;
a daughter, Kathy (Griffin) Brennan of McKenzie; and three
brothers, Alton Tate of Gleason, David Tate of Dyersburg,
and Joseph Coy Tate of Gleason.
